"In The Sentimental Past": Cultural Identity Through Film Music Before And After The Hong Kong Handover, Kasady Liu
"In The Sentimental Past": Cultural Identity Through Film Music Before And After The Hong Kong Handover, Kasady Liu
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Hong Kong: a city characterized by Jackie Chan, kung fu, and its surprising “in-betweenness.” Not quite Eastern and not quite Western, Hong Kong has been placed in a unique position due to its recent handover from Great Britain to China. As a result of this handover, the people of Hong Kong have displayed various attitudes towards their previous, foreign system of democratic government and their new, Communist system of government. Hong Kong’s cultural identity is closely tied with the handover, and in this paper, I analyze how the film music of Hong Kong movies have conveyed ideas about their cultural …
Authenticity And Practicality: Evaluating And Performing Multicultural Choral Music, Jesse Noote
Authenticity And Practicality: Evaluating And Performing Multicultural Choral Music, Jesse Noote
Dissertations
Many choral music educators believe that multicultural music is a vital part of any choral curriculum. However, the research shows that these same choral directors are reluctant to select multicultural octavos because they lack training in non-Western music, which prevents them from effectively teaching and performing this music authentically. The purpose of this dissertation is to equip choral directors with the necessary tools for bridging the gap between desiring to perform and actually performing multicultural octavos.
Six authors have provided authenticity checklists that are designed to help music educators evaluate and perform multicultural music. This research synthesizes those lists to …
The Fusions And Confusions Of The Concierto De Aranjuez In Jazz: A Listener’S Musings, Antoni Pizà
The Fusions And Confusions Of The Concierto De Aranjuez In Jazz: A Listener’S Musings, Antoni Pizà
Publications and Research
Reflections on Sketches of Spain (1960) by Miles Davis and Gil Evans, focusing on their jazz version of Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez (1940). Motivated by Edward Said’s and Homi K. Bhabha’s writings, the recording is analyzed as a cultural artifact characterized by its “formal instability” and its typological “inbetweenness,” rendering it neither classical nor jazz; neither Spanish nor non-Spanish; and neither traditional nor modern, among other dualities. Sketches is an artwork that defies categories and inhabits the interstices of cultural expectations.

Fusiones Y Confusiones Del Concierto De Aranjuez En El Jazz: Reflexiones De Un Oyente, Antoni Pizà
Publications and Research

Karakalpak Dastans, Arzu Azimova
Eurasian music science journal
Both all over Central Asia area and Karakalpakstan epic art is represented in the genre of dastan. Dastan can be defined as a comprehensive poetic legend, a story combining in itself prose, verses, and music. In given article such dastans are considered as «Almapys», «Gor ogli» («Kor-ogli»), «Edige», «Ashik Garib», «Shokhsanam and Garib» and also having local distribution such as «Kirk Kiz», «Maspatsha», «Sharyar», «Koblan». Karakalpak dastans, as many Central Asian dastans, are based on alternation of prosaic and poetic sections. Tradition bearers of epic performance in Karakalpakstan are jirau and bakhshi (baksis).

Michael Haydn's Early Masses And Their Viennese Context, Bruce C. Macintyre
HAYDN: Online Journal of the Haydn Society of North America
Although Joseph Haydn felt that his brother Michael (1737-1806) held “first place” in the field of church music, scholarship on the brother surprisingly still has many lacunae; e.g., in the study of Michael’s early works composed before he went to Salzburg. Nearly half of this brother’s 28 settings of the Mass Ordinary for voices with orchestral accompaniment were composed in his early years, i.e. after his early studies in Vienna ca. 1745 and during his work for the bishop in Grosswardein (Oradea, Romania) and prior to his arrival in Salzburg in August 1763. This paper attempts to shed more light …
