Network: Audio Sculpted Through Alliance, Damien Shane Moffitt Jan 2016

Network: Audio Sculpted Through Alliance, Damien Shane Moffitt

Senior Projects Spring 2016

Network is a compilation of my work, collected from some of my collaborations where I represent the diversity and chaos of my musical career.

In the first half of this double album I explore drumming along to a dear friend’s (Leach) music, trying to add a little bit more of a live flavor. What made this more of a challenge was that I would not be able to record with an actual drum set that semester. I had to improvise and set up an electronic drum kit inside of a friend’s house. Jack Moulton was that friend. He also acted …

The Singing Cello: The Use Of Virtuosity And Lyricism In Selected Repertoire, Henry A. Weberpal Jan 2016

The Singing Cello: The Use Of Virtuosity And Lyricism In Selected Repertoire, Henry A. Weberpal

Music: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the repertoire of the cello from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras, and how the demands of virtuosity and lyricism changed the way composers wrote for the instrument. These demands contribute to the progression of the cello as it shifts from an accompanying instrument, to that of a solo one. We will look at operas by Monteverdi and Handel; solo works by Bach; and concertos by Boccherini, Haydn, and Schumann.

Music For Brass Quintet With Orchestral Accompaniment: Commissioned Works, The Annapolis Brass Quintet, And A Survey Of Literature For Brass Quintet And Orchestra, Stacy L. Simpson Jan 2016

Music For Brass Quintet With Orchestral Accompaniment: Commissioned Works, The Annapolis Brass Quintet, And A Survey Of Literature For Brass Quintet And Orchestra, Stacy L. Simpson

Theses and Dissertations--Music

Today’s leading brass chamber ensemble is the brass quintet, whose inception was relatively late compared to the string quartet or woodwind quintet. The first modern brass quintet formed in the 1950s, while the first string quartet can be traced to the 17th century. Compositions for woodwind quintet were written as early as 1811 during the Classical Period.

The New York Brass Quintet, American Brass Quintet, and Annapolis Brass Quintet commissioned a large portion of the currently existing brass quintet literature. The literature grew exponentially as the brass quintet became popular in the 1960s. Also during this time, a new genre …

Robert Nelson's A Room With A View: The Creation Of A Contemporary Opera, Marcello Cormio Jan 2016

Robert Nelson's A Room With A View: The Creation Of A Contemporary Opera, Marcello Cormio

Theses and Dissertations--Music

My recent engagement as music director and conductor of Robert Nelson’s A Room with a View (1992, rev. 2004) has offered me the valuable opportunity to work on an opera side by side with its composer. The purpose of this dissertation is to reconstruct the various stages of the process of creation, interpretation, and performance of a contemporary opera, addressing aspects of the collaboration between the composer and the conductor.

The methodology used in my research is based primarily on direct observation and interview. The investigation is conducted from the perspective of a “participant-observer,” due to my personal involvement in …

The Choral Composer/Conductor Collective: An Ongoing Experiment In Musical Self-Governance, Julian D. Bryson Jan 2016

The Choral Composer/Conductor Collective: An Ongoing Experiment In Musical Self-Governance, Julian D. Bryson

Theses and Dissertations--Music

C4: The Choral Composer/Conductor Collective and Triad: Boston’s Choral Collective are the first choirs to explore collectivity as a method of ensemble organization. While more traditional ensembles have a single artistic director, C4 and Triad share and rotate leadership responsibilities among the full membership. Artistic and logistical decisions develop through conversation, consensus, and/or voting.

This monograph draws primarily on interviews with thirteen current and former members of the two ensembles as well as the author’s personal experiences with Triad’s inaugural concert cycle to present a narrative description of member characteristics, governance, and operational processes. Interview responses are compared to relevant …

Childe Roland: String Quartet, Percussion And Electric Guitar, David Blevins Jan 2016

Childe Roland: String Quartet, Percussion And Electric Guitar, David Blevins

Theses and Dissertations--Music

An original composition in five movements for string quartet, percussion and electric guitar. Majority of the electric guitar parts are marked “quasi-improvisation”, with the intent of allowing the player freedom to explore their own creativity and expand upon the notated guitar parts as desired. The percussion parts, also marked “quasi-improvisation”, allow the player to expand upon the notated rhythms and choose their own combination of muted wood blocks as desired.

The name of this piece and its individual movements pay homage to the author Steven King and his series of books known as the The Dark Tower. Much of …

An Alternative Approach To The Singer's Breath: Method And Workshop, Bradley S. Williard Jan 2016

An Alternative Approach To The Singer's Breath: Method And Workshop, Bradley S. Williard

Theses and Dissertations--Music

This research endeavors to stretch the boundaries of vocal training, a field defined by its century-old techniques and teachings, to include the cultivation of a relationship with the breath, body, and Self. The paper reviews the contributions of Ilse Middendorf and Carl Stough’s work with the breath and body and outlines a new method, Unlock Your Breath (UYB) – Performance Breathwork, which integrates the greatest strengths of those methods. UYB Performance Breathwork teaches the singer’s breath as a way towards deeper embodiment of Self (mind-body-voice relationship), while creating a stronger breath-body-voice connection with minimum effort and maximum efficiency. This …

The Music Of Nicola Ferro: A Description And Performance Guide To Tetralogy Of The Sun Suite And Annotated Guide To Published Works, Bradley James Keesler Jan 2016

The Music Of Nicola Ferro: A Description And Performance Guide To Tetralogy Of The Sun Suite And Annotated Guide To Published Works, Bradley James Keesler

Theses and Dissertations

The subject of this research document is the music of Italian trombonist and composer Nicola Ferro (b. 1974). The main purpose of this document is an attempt to initiate scholarly research of Ferro and his compositions. While much of his music has been performed and recorded by some of the world’s greatest musicians (most notably Joseph Alessi, New York Philharmonic Principal Trombonist), there is very little written research on the subject of Ferro or his music.

Part of this document will serve as a performance guide to one of his most important compositions, the Tetralogy of the Sun Suite for …

Music As A Means Of Connecting, Understanding, And Being Understood, Michael Chase Dickerson Jan 2016

Music As A Means Of Connecting, Understanding, And Being Understood, Michael Chase Dickerson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The recital described in this abstract is the result of an active engagement with friends and acquaintances in artistic fields—students and teachers, performers, composers, and audience members, authors, poets, and painters. Some of the pieces included are abstract, in that they are neither programmatic nor texted, but every piece is, in another sense, concrete, because my music is a representation of the creative intelligences of a community, which together produce something real and embodied. My music is intended to be a centerpiece for interaction, a means of connecting with and understanding one another in a way that is perhaps unique …

La Voix Humaine: A Technology Time Warp, Whitney Myers Jan 2016

La Voix Humaine: A Technology Time Warp, Whitney Myers

Theses and Dissertations--Music

In 1959 French composer Francis Poulenc composed the opera La Voix humaine based on Jean Cocteau’s original play (1928). La Voix humaine is a one-act opera for soprano. The main character, Elle, spends the opera on the phone with her ex-lover who is marrying another the next day. Many musicians believe this opera is difficult or impossible to update, due to the use of the telephone and its dated operator system, which is a large aspect of the action and drama.

This document provides the reader with a new interpretation of the opera with modern technology. Chapter One begins with …

The Adjudicator Speaks: A Study Of Choral Festival Adjudicators’ Practices, Procedures And Preferences, David L. Hensley Jan 2016

The Adjudicator Speaks: A Study Of Choral Festival Adjudicators’ Practices, Procedures And Preferences, David L. Hensley

Theses and Dissertations--Music

Choral Festivals, whether competitive or non-competitive, involve preparation, performance, and evaluation. The process of preparing for and performing at a choral festival often leaves the conductor and choir members wondering what the adjudicators (judges) will be listening for and on what basis the choir will receive its critique. Few if any music education publications (including methods textbooks, scholarly publications, and journal articles) have addressed this topic, and those that have addressed it have failed to include the adjudicator’s point of view. This dissertation addresses the point of view of the choral festival adjudicator, giving insight into the standards of performance …

Exploration Of Empfindsamer Stil: The Creation And Performance Of An Informed Performance Edition Of Cpe Bach's Concerto In D Minor For Flute And Orchestra, Emily C. Bicknese Jan 2016

Exploration Of Empfindsamer Stil: The Creation And Performance Of An Informed Performance Edition Of Cpe Bach's Concerto In D Minor For Flute And Orchestra, Emily C. Bicknese

Honors Program Theses

Through research of the unique Empfindsamer stil (“sensitive style”) developed by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, I have constructed an informed performance edition for the second movement, “Un poco andante,” of Bach’s Concerto in D minor for Flute and Orchestra according to the performance practices of the era. The slow movement allows the greatest possibilities for embellishment and stylistic interpretation. For the second movement performance edition, I have written exact musical notation for the solo flute line, including ornamentation, articulation, phrasing, dynamics, tempo, and an original cadenza. All notations have been based on performance practices of the Empfindsamer stil. In the …

Matteo Garrone's Reality:The Big Brother Spectacle And Its Rupture, Anna Paparcone Bronner Jan 2016

Matteo Garrone's Reality:The Big Brother Spectacle And Its Rupture, Anna Paparcone Bronner

Faculty Journal Articles

In Garrone’s film, Reality, the protagonist Luciano Ciotola becomes obsessed with his participation in the reality TV show Big Brother to the point that his whole life turns into a spectacle. In Italian cinema studies no other scholar had yet analyzed this film, despite its success and the very engaging and up-to-date topic. In my article, at the diegetic level, I show that the spectator experiences an overlap and a (con)fusion between Luciano’s everyday reality and his life as a member of the reality TV show. However, keeping in mind Guy Debord’s seminal work The Society of the Spectacle and …
