The purpose of this research was to gain information about Lars-Erik Larsson and his contributions to trombone repertoire. The specific problems of the study were as follows: 1) to identify and investigate Larsson’s major contributions to twentieth century music; 2) to identify and investigate Larsson’s contribution to trombone repertoire; 3) to analyze Larsson’s Concertino for Trombone and String Orchestra Op. 45 No. 7 in terms of form, structure, and twentieth century techniques. A biographical overview of Larsson’s life is given as background and as insight to his compositions.

The purpose of this research was to gain information about Charles-Auguste de Beriot (1802-1870) and his contributions to the violin. The specific problems of the study were as follows: 1.) to identify what influenced the compositions of Charles-Auguste de Beriot; 2.) to outline important developments in his writing that contributed to violin technique and Romanticism; and 3.) to analyze Concerto IX in A minor for Violin, Op. 104 in terms of melody, harmony, tonality, texture, and form. Since its first publication in 1818, Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein has left a lasting impression upon the world speaking to a multitude of audiences including artists, scientists, philosophers, and society as a whole. Considering the impact of Frankenstein through its evolution as a cultural myth in various plays and films, this thesis will provide a way to gauge the relevance of Shelley’s story as an adaptation. This thesis/dissertation is an exploration into Jaco Pastorius' approach to improvisation via detailed analysis of seven selected transcriptions between the years 1975-80. This dissertation also analyses Pastorius' development as a performer, highlighting the many techniques he pioneered on the electric bass guitar from a historic perspective focusing on the years 1967-74. The final chapter of this dissertation presents a series of etudes that are designed to assist an advanced performer assimilate selected aspects of Pastorius' harmonic approach to improvisation.

This dissertation serves to give an exposition of the origins, rehearsal and performance practices for minimalist music with particular attention paid to Music for Eighteen Musicians by Steve Reich. It contains interviews with performers of this work and attempts to define the underlying principles of minimalist music with particular reference to concentration and tempo. Rehearsal procedures are discussed as well as issues such as stamina and acoustics. The final section is dedicated to common mistakes and a reflection on the work from those who have performed it.

The impetus behind this study is the suspicion that singers beginning their training are either unaware of the vast amount of preparation that needs to occur when performing any work or they are aware but have no idea where to start. The understanding of text and an emotional connection with its meaning are vital to a successful Lied performance. This dissertation aims to create a method of preparing the text (of a Lied) that encourages detailed observation and creative thought, and which enables a musician with limited understanding of the German language to comfortably acquaint themselves with the repertoire.
