State Of The Art: A Sampling Of Twenty-First-Century American Baroque Flute Pedagogy, Tamara Tanner

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Creative Work, and Performance

During the Baroque flute revival in 1970s Europe, American modern flute instructors who were interested in studying Baroque flute traveled to Europe to work with professional instructors. They then transmitted that knowledge to their students upon returning to America, furthering the modern study of Baroque flute in America. Now, thanks to their efforts and those of academic institutions and professional organizations such as the National Flute Association, there are many opportunities in America to hear performances by dynamic Baroque flutists, to perform and compete on Baroque flute, and to learn from respected Baroque flute instructors. There are also numerous texts …

A Performer’S Guide To Astor Piazzolla's Tango-Études Pour Flûte Seule: An Analytical Approach, Asis Reyes Feb 2018

A Performer’S Guide To Astor Piazzolla's Tango-Études Pour Flûte Seule: An Analytical Approach, Asis Reyes

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation aims to give performers deeper insight into the style of the Tango-Études pour flûte seule and tango music in general as they seek to learn and apply tango performance conventions to the Tango-Études and other tango works. Significant research elements of this dissertation include a complete analysis of phrasing, tonality, and formal structure and how these relate to performance in each of the six Tango-Études and an examination of Piazzolla’s compositional use of descending chromatic chords and implied descending lines; my reductions of this voice leading as it appears in the Tango-Études are exclusive to this dissertation. This …

A Study Of The Varying Interpretations Of The Opening Flute Solo In Debussy’S Prelude A L’Apres-Midi D’Un Faune Through 90 Years Of Sound Recordings; With Special Consideration For The Performances And Pedagogy Of William Kincaid, Virginia W. Tutton

Theses and Dissertations--Music

Claude Debussy's Prelude a l’apres-midi d’un faune [Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun] opens with an unaccompanied flute solo that famously tests breath control, tone production, and capacity for musical expression. All aspiring flutists must master this solo, because it is frequently requested on orchestral and collegiate auditions. To aid flutists in their preparation, many notable pedagogues and performers have provided written and verbal commentary with suggestions for crafting a successful performance; however, it is unclear whether or not actual performances reflect these teachings. In other words, do the pedagogues practice what they preach? This study uses audio analysis …

The Kingma System Flute: Redesigning The Nineteenth-Century Flute For The Twenty-First Century, Diane Elise Kessel Jan 2018

The Kingma System Flute: Redesigning The Nineteenth-Century Flute For The Twenty-First Century, Diane Elise Kessel

Theses and Dissertations

This project investigates the development and reception of the Kingma System flute, designed by Dutch flutemaker Eva Kingma. For some time now, flutists have been honing creative techniques to provide imperfect approximations of what composers have specified, but the Kingma mechanism achieves the exact effects desired with ease. Through her close work with composers and performers, Eva Kingma was able to create a mechanism that is comfortable to play, versatile in performance, and beautifully suited for contemporary repertoire. The Kingma flute is an invaluable tool for performers and an exciting new voice for composers, offering unprecedented musical possibilities and yet …
