Dr. Nick Ross, Piano: Virtuosic Piano Music For The Left Hand Alone, Music Department

Three of the four works are well-established masterpieces within this genre, and the fourth is a world premiere of a new work by American composer Kent Holliday. This performance is connected to Dr. Ross's research on left-hand literature.

I was commissioned in the summer of 2018 by the singer and librettist Daniel Neer to collaborate on a piece entitled Lucky Dragon No. 5. It was to be roughly an hour long, and was scored for baritone voice and percussion quartet.

Set in Jazz-age Chicago, the musical is based on a 1926 play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins about actual criminals and crimes she reported on. Through this project I sought to examine early opera as well as opera in America today and educate the average person about the value and availability of the genre. In order to do so, I organized and directed a small traveling opera troupe to perform in a variety of locations throughout Columbus, Ohio. The troupe performed at three locations over the course of the fall semester in 2018. With each performance, I worked to educate as many people as possible about opera and its presence in society.

Mr. Zero is the eternal "little man," shallow yet possessing some dignity, who murders his boss when he learns that, after twenty-five years of being a bookkeeper, he is to be replaced by an adding machine. Condemned to death despite his piteous stream-of-consciousness appeal to the jury, he is executed and appears next in the Elysian Fields, where he meets and enjoys a brief idyll with Daisy, his deceased co-worker, whose love he had secretly desired.

My Fair Lady is a musical based on George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. The story concerns Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins, a phoneticist, so that she may pass as a lady. The original Broadway, London and film versions all starred Rex Harrison.

When it comes to music on the Mississippi river, the Cotton Blossom show boat is the place to go. When musical main attraction Julie Laverne and her husband are suddenly forced to leave the show, Cotton Blossom owner Andy Hawks' own daughter, Magnolia, takes center stage. She soon falls madly in love with roguish gambler Gaylord Ravenal, and the two leave the Cotton Blossom on a honeymoon -- only to enter into a tumultuous marriage.

Burgess Shaffer

Burgess “Red” Peverly Shaffer (1906-1973) was born to Austin Shaffer and Stella in Somerset, PA. He had one brother, Glen, who would go on to be a minister in Westerville. Burgess came to Otterbein in 1924, and after graduation he returned home. In 1934, Burgess married Mildred Irene Stevanus. Together they had two children, Rodney and Beverly. Burgess worked as an electrician for the Pennsylvania Electric Company, and was a lay leader at the First United Methodist Church.
