Selected Elementary Music Educators’ Perceptions Of Curriculum, Scheduling, And Workload, Mara Nowlin
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
Elementary music is a field that many people would agree is important, but the subject does not always get an equal opportunity when stacked up against subjects that are regulated with standardized tests, such as math or language arts. I set out to study elementary music programs in the region where I am employed (the Four State Region of Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma) in the Midwest. Some questions I sought to answer were what types of elementary music curricula are available and popular, and how districts come to select their music curriculum. Additionally, I wanted to examine the school …
Beginning Band: First Steps Instructing Students With Wind Instruments, Christine N. Lovell
Beginning Band: First Steps Instructing Students With Wind Instruments, Christine N. Lovell
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
One of the most important moments in beginning band is when a student first learns how to assemble and hold the instrument. As a band director, it is vital to be precise in explaining each element of this process. If steps are skipped over in this process, bad habits can form quickly and will cause more issues for the director. Instrument assembly and holding the instrument are covered in detail to help young band directors know how to explain this process. Additionally, this will help to find the bad habits quickly so problems do not snowball over time. It is …
Community Bands: Creating A More Accessible Community Band Experience Through The Use Of Multi-Level Repertoire, Cooper Neil
Community Bands: Creating A More Accessible Community Band Experience Through The Use Of Multi-Level Repertoire, Cooper Neil
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
This thesis hypothesizes that the use of multi-level repertoire in community bands will allow ensembles to more directly cater to their community member’s musical expectations while respecting the issue of time commitment for others. In this way, a community ensemble can become more accessible and, ideally, lead to a more diverse and representative group. Creating a volunteer community ensemble that accounts for musician’s available time, skill level, and desire for appropriate level of challenge is what this document seeks to address.

An Evaluation Of Tests Of Musical Talent, Herbert Clark Levan
An Evaluation Of Tests Of Musical Talent, Herbert Clark Levan
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
The problem consists of an evaluation of tests of musical ability to discover which tests are most reliable and useful for elementary school purposes.
In a review of the literature related to the problem an attempt was made to present different viewpoints fairly, to summarize evidence of outstanding tests, to analyze contradictory evidences for possible solution of the questions involved, and to set up criteria for the selection of the best tests.
For further evidence, four selected batteries of comparatively new tests were given to over one thousand children in grades two to six in the schools of Parsons, Kansas. …
