Performing Original Arrangements Of Jazz Repertoire, Spencer M. Mackey May 2024

Performing Original Arrangements Of Jazz Repertoire, Spencer M. Mackey

Honors Capstones

My goal with this Capstone project was to encapsulate my four years of music and jazz education at Northern Illinois University into a senior recital. I picked repertoire that spanned my whole college career and decided to arrange for jazz combo settings which is something I enjoy doing a lot. Arranging is an important concept in jazz music. My research for this project took a relatively simple approach; I listened to jazz music. Specifically, I listened to multiple versions of the tunes on my recital, compositions by the composers I was featuring on my recital, and other various recordings that …

Exploring The Bass Trombone, Liam Kantzler May 2024

Exploring The Bass Trombone, Liam Kantzler

Honors Capstones

The purpose of the capstone is to provide a performance on the bass trombone that explores many different styles of music. I will use different techniques to evoke many different styles, as well as performing pieces outside of the standard repertoire, and some that aren't written for the instrument. The process for this capstone began long before the project began, although the preparation for the performance included daily practice and study of each of the pieces. Many rehearsals were put together, including music for chamber music portions and a few to put solo parts with piano accompaniment. The performance itself …

The Honors Capstone Composition Recital is an exhibition of my own musical compositions from throughout my undergraduate study. The performance was held at the NIU Recital Hall (located in the Music Building at 550 Lucinda Ave.) at 7:00 pm CST on April 16, 2023. It was available for free to the public, …

Exploring Unaccompanied Clarinet Repertoire, Kamil Lebowa Apr 2023

Exploring Unaccompanied Clarinet Repertoire, Kamil Lebowa

Honors Capstones

The goal of this project was to explore solo clarinet works over the course of the semester and to perform them in an unaccompanied recital. The project culminated in a full-length recital on April 21st, 2023, in the Recital Hall of the NIU Music Building. Each of the works that were performed explored a different aspect of unaccompanied clarinet music. The works that I chose required me to learn how to play the clarinet in a variety of different ways. Some of the pieces required a high level of technical efficacy while others required extended techniques, playing on different parts …

Senior Recital Program Research, Kasey Pennington Dec 2022

Senior Recital Program Research, Kasey Pennington

Honors Capstones

I performed a vocal recital as part of my final requirements towards my Music Education degree and developed an additional program including research on the works I performed. The program consisted of biographies for composers Haydn, Schumann, Fauré, Obradors, and Beach, additional context on specific songs, and translations of songs not sung in English. I created this program in order to provide more detailed information for audience members who were interested in further enrichment or had particular curiosity for any performed works. This recital was a culmination of my efforts in the vocal department of the School of Music throughout …
