My focus is on the importance of using a wide variety of resources -- interdisciplinary databases, full text journal resources, archives and specialized music collections -- to piece together a picture of the role of women the early years of folk music scholarship, and in the preservation and documentation of Irish traditional music. Inspired by early women folk song collectors in Maine, and Maine singers of old who who sang ballads of Irish origin, the author questioned why there was so little information about women collectors of traditional music in Ireland and the repertoire they discovered. The current state of conducting as an academic and professional pursuit shows a plethora of conventional traditions and techniques that are accepted without question, but a dearth of ideas and approaches that will develop the skills essential to producing an effective conductor. This profile is especially apparent in the field‘s literature. This monograph will compile a list of these titles and annotate each one, in order to determine the common threads that run between them. This annotated bibliography of academic writing on women in rock in pop should provide an overview of most of the scholarly literature on the topic and reflects my personal interest in methodology. When I returned to graduate school in the late 1990s to study American studies and popular culture, I discovered that academe had changed considerably from my undergraduate days when I studied history of art. Although traditional academic disciplines continue, I found that in the humanities and social sciences, there were no longer neat categories for disciplines and disciplines no longer were isolated from each other.
