Form In The Preludes Of J.S. Bach's Well Tempered Clavier, Daniel E. Prindle Aug 2023

Form In The Preludes Of J.S. Bach's Well Tempered Clavier, Daniel E. Prindle

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation analyzes the forms of the preludes in J.S. Bach’s Well Tempered Clavier. The prelude originated as an improvised genre in the mid-fifteenth century. Treatises of the period gave instruction on how to improvise and eventually compose preludes and that tradition informed Bach’s compositional practice. However, an additional genre, the invention, played a similarly important role in influencing the composition of the preludes in the Well Tempered Clavier, particularly in Book II. I analyze the forms of the preludes by proposing a new method: dimensional interplay. This method examines the form of each prelude in three musical dimensions: melody, …

A Historical Comparison Of The St. John And St. Matthew Passions Of Johann Sebastian Bach, Emily Dunlap Apr 2023

A Historical Comparison Of The St. John And St. Matthew Passions Of Johann Sebastian Bach, Emily Dunlap

Honors College

The St. John and St. Matthew Passions, based on the Gospels of the same names, are the only two existing passions by German composer Johann Sebastian Bach that have survived from the Baroque music world. However, the St. Matthew Passion is more well-known and recognized than the St. John Passion. Why is that? One of the reasons why this may be the case is because the St. Matthew Passion is a larger, more extensive work compared to the St John Passion in relation to its parts. The St Matthew Passion is equipped with an orchestra, a double choir, …

Two Evenings Of Performance - Hearing The Unheard: Music By Mazzoli, The Chevalier De Saint-Georges, Coleridge-Taylor, And Lili Boulanger; Joys Of Spring: Music By Paris-Carter, Bach, And Dvorak, Dávid M. Bánóczi-Ruof

Senior Projects Spring 2022

The program of my first senior concert formed almost accidentally, yet a common and important thread quickly emerged. Few, if any, of the names or the pieces on the program have entered into the canon of classical music. With compositions by Missy Mazzoli, the Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and Lili Boulanger, I was able to introduce an audience to people who are not the status quo dead cishet (cisgender, heterosexual) white male composer.

The performance of the music of such artists was inspired by an urgency that I felt since arriving at Bard, and that became an international necessity …

Lost In Translation? A Comparison Of The Anna Magdalena Bach Manuscript And John W. Duarte Arrangement Of Cello Suite No. 3, Bwv 1009 By Johann Sebastian Bach, Benjamin Riley

Theses and Dissertations

This study explores Anna Magdalena Bach’s manuscript of Cello Suite No. 3, BWV 1009 and John W. Duarte’s arrangement of this work. The findings of this study show that this arrangement is idiomatic for guitar, incorporates J. S. Bach’s approach to arrangement, and is part of a long musical tradition.

Bach To Bassics - From A Student's Perspective, Samuel Robinson Pasqualetto

Theses and Dissertations

This paper adds the valuable perspective of a student to the research of J.S. Bach’s Suites for solo violoncello BWV 1107-1012 performed on the double bass. This study stands on two main premises: the individual study and performance of J.S. Bach suites for solo cello on the double bass and postulates that there are invaluable positive effects to be achieved through the extended exposure, studying, and performing of the aforementioned works as means to promote high-level critical thinking and better understanding of the phrasal, motivic and thematic structure of musical works of the Baroque period. This paper covers the journey …

The Meaning Of Music, Caleb Loius Orenstein Carman Jan 2021

The Meaning Of Music, Caleb Loius Orenstein Carman

Senior Projects Fall 2021

This project combines solo performances of music on piano, collaborative playing/rehearsing, improvisation, and composition. In both parts of the project, I share my performances of François Couperin, J. S. Bach, Schubert, and Ravel, and include my own compositions alongside. I tackle certain pieces that lie within the ‘long eighteenth century’ and demonstrate how improvisation is an integral part of music-making for composers. I believe in order to fulfill my own desires as a musician, I need to develop my aptitude in multiple areas — performance, composition, improvisation, chamber music, etc. — in such a way that the practice of one …

Robert Shaw is hailed to this day as the most influential and celebrated choral conductor to have ever been trained in the United States. His lifelong commitment in bringing the great masterworks of the choral/orchestral repertoire to American audiences is legendary. To assist in this endeavor, he translated and published several choral masterworks into English for accessibility to the American audiences. This performance used the Robert Shaw English adaptation of the St. Matthew Passion which he completed and published in 1959.

Ornamentation In Bach’S 21st Century Evangelist, David Seay, Dr. Robert Brandt Jan 2016

Ornamentation In Bach’S 21st Century Evangelist, David Seay, Dr. Robert Brandt

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Vocal performers of the past century appeared to be unaware of Bach scholars’ discoveries regarding ornamentation. Despite scholars having written more about ornamentation than any other performance-related topic, recordings from 1945-1975 indicate that vocalists performed Bach’s music with “basic principles [of ornamentation] but took little account of scholarly detail or stylistic specifications.” 1 It was also discovered that despite Bach scholars’ efforts to reach their vocalist-audience, discussion on how to ornament the recitative – a music form most unique to vocalists – was largely overlooked.

J.S. Bach, Suite For Violoncello Solo, Performed On Mandola, Lee Bidgood

Lee Bidgood

My arrangement of this iconic piece for mandola, an interpretation project that emerged from my work leading a mandolin orchestra at ETSU. This particular recording was facilitated by the discovery of an instrument donated to our department, a 1920s Gibson mandola. This fabulous instrument gave me the voice with which I could articulate the way I heard this piece, one that I have turned over in my head and hands since I was in high school.

J. S. Bach's Modal Compositional Practice In The Chorale Preludes For Solo Organ: A Schenkerian Perspective, Michael Fitzpatrick Oct 2015

J. S. Bach's Modal Compositional Practice In The Chorale Preludes For Solo Organ: A Schenkerian Perspective, Michael Fitzpatrick

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation proposes a Schenkerian perspective of J. S. Bach’s modal compositional practice in his chorale preludes for solo organ. It develops two major themes: first, a viable framework for reconciling Schenker’s theory of tonality with the kind of composition that Bach’s modal music exemplifies (chapter 3); and second, a definition of Bach’s modal compositional practice in the chorale preludes as revealed through analysis of the repertoire (chapter 4). Additionally, the dissertation explores the pertinence of traditional modal theory to Bach’s modal music (chapter 1), confronts Schenker’s evaluation of modal composition (chapter 1), and responds to other scholarly work in …

Music During The Reformation: Changing Times And Changing Minds, Carolyn S. Ticker Apr 2015

Music During The Reformation: Changing Times And Changing Minds, Carolyn S. Ticker

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

As music developed throughout the early centuries its function changed according to the philosophies and principles governing the culture to which it belonged. This is readily apparent in the church, as one can trace the development of music in the worship service from the Medieval times to the Reformation and beyond. During the Protestant Reformation music’s role in the church changed. My presentation seeks to discover how music was used in the different branches of Protestantism of the time and how its usage compared with other sects; specifically I compared and contrasted what worship would have looked like in the …

The Violin’S Solo Voice: J.S. Bach’S Contribution To The Violin’S Development, Samantha Grelen Mar 2015

The Violin’S Solo Voice: J.S. Bach’S Contribution To The Violin’S Development, Samantha Grelen

Music and Worship Student Presentations

The solo violin sonatas and partitas of Bach are a staple of any classical violinist’s repertoire. The high technical and artistic ability required to perform these works reflects the growing emphasis placed on instrumental performance during their time of composition. This increased interest was due in large part to the strides made in the violin’s development, ushering in with it a completely new method of playing, and therefore a new method of composing for the instrument. Bach composed his solo violin works while serving as the kapellmeister in the court of Prince Leopold at Cöthen, which, due to his extraordinary …

Instruction, Devotion, And Affection: Three Roles Of Bach’S Well-Tempered Clavier, Rachel A. Lowrance Jun 2013

Instruction, Devotion, And Affection: Three Roles Of Bach’S Well-Tempered Clavier, Rachel A. Lowrance

Musical Offerings

Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier has been analyzed from almost every angle imaginable, yet it has not often been studied from the position of discovering what forces influenced Bach while he was writing it. For example, Bach was a keyboard teacher for most of his professional years, and this influenced many of the styles and genres in which he chose to write his preludes and fugues. This also influenced his desire to gather the preludes and fugues into a unified collection. Additionally, Bach was a devout Lutheran who never discarded his religion when he sat down at the keyboard to compose. No …

The Design Of P200: Mensural Quantity And Proportion In The Early Version Of The Art Of Fugue, Joel Thomas Runyan Jan 2013

The Design Of P200: Mensural Quantity And Proportion In The Early Version Of The Art Of Fugue, Joel Thomas Runyan

Theses and Dissertations--Music

The intended structure of Bach's ostensibly unfinished Die Kunst der Fuge has been debated since the work's publication in 1751. This study examines the proportional design of an early version of the work, subsisting in the autograph manuscript (P200) of the early 1740s. As the only complete source extant, P200 and its revisions provide substantial insight into Bach's intentions for the later version of the Art of Fugue.

J. S. Bach And The High School Choir: A Resource Guide For Teachers Of Intermediate And Advanced Level High School Choirs, Lynn G. Atkins Jr.

Dissertations, 2014-2019

While familiarly with Bach’s well-known themes exists in the general aspects of contemporary lifestyle, providing exposure to the choral works of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) presents a particular challenge to the high school choral director. The purpose of this investigation is to provide a resource guide for the performance of choral masterworks of J. S. Bach at the high school level. For the purposes of narrowing this investigation, the following masterworks were reviewed: Magnificat, BWV 243; Mass in B Minor, BWV 232; Christmas Oratorio, BWV 248; St. John Passion, BWV 245; and St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244. A review of …

The Form Of The Preludes To Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suites, Daniel E. Prindle May 2012

The Form Of The Preludes To Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suites, Daniel E. Prindle

Daniel E. Prindle

This thesis proposes a methodology for understanding the form of a Baroque prelude, particularly the preludes to the Six Suites for Unaccompanied Violoncello written by Johann Sebastian Bach. Four musical dimensions, tonal structure, motive, texture, and the potential implications of a piece’s genre, parse the preludes in different ways. As the features of these musical dimensions undergo either an evolution or a dramatic change over the course of each prelude, they each suggest a different form. Points of change in each dimension delineate segments in the music. When aligned, these changes create significant formal junctures and suggest an overall form …
