Music Of The Divine: Interweaving Threads Connecting Contemporary Chant-Based Piano Repertoire, Jeremy D. Duck
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Creative Work, and Performance
The purpose of this document is to prove chant remains an important source of inspiration among living composers, and, despite the number of piano works already incorporating chant, composers today are still finding unique ways to include chant in their music. To achieve this objective, representative works have been selected for research and analysis for four of the major chant traditions. Connor Chee’s The Navajo Piano, Victoria Bond’s Illuminations on Byzantine Chant, and Hayes Biggs’ E.M. am Flügel: Poem-Étude for Piano Solo, though the chants from which they are inspired are diverse in concept and style, they …

Rediscovering Argentine Repertoire Written In The 1930s: A Performative Study Of Concert Piano Works By Lita Spena And Celia Torrá, Florencia Zuloaga
Rediscovering Argentine Repertoire Written In The 1930s: A Performative Study Of Concert Piano Works By Lita Spena And Celia Torrá, Florencia Zuloaga
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Creative Work, and Performance
A survey of the piano repertoire written during the decade of 1930 in Argentina reveals the rising number of several works written by women composers. For the first time, the years that followed the inauguration of the National Conservatory of Music and Theater in 1924 witnessed a professionalization of women in the field of music composition, and two figures made great strides in this regard. Celia Torrá and Lita Spena stood out among the first female composition students at the National Conservatory and some of the first to succeed as professional composers. Furthermore, they were among the first women to …
The Romantic Style In The Piano Works Of Manuel M. Ponce, Oscar Vazquez Medrano
The Romantic Style In The Piano Works Of Manuel M. Ponce, Oscar Vazquez Medrano
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Creative Work, and Performance
Manuel M. Ponce is one of the most recognized Mexican composers of the twentieth century. He is known for his contributions to the guitar and piano literature, but more importantly, for his efforts to introduce musical nationalism in a world where Romantic opera and salon music dominated Mexico’s music scene.
This document has an introduction, six chapters, a conclusion, a bibliography, and three appendixes. The introduction includes pertinent background on Ponce’s music and the types of research dedicated to him, as well as the stylistic division of his music by Ponce scholars.
Chapter one explains the historical context in Mexico …

Adult Recreational Music-Making And Its Place In Piano Pedagogy: An Examination Of The Value Of Rmm To Both Student And Teacher, Jen Bowlds
Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship
This project aims to answer the following research question: How can the piano pedagogy community embrace the Recreational Music Making movement to expand its reach among adults and transform the piano teacher’s sense of professional satisfaction and career sustainability? I will examine the opportunities that exist within piano pedagogy and the growth potential for RMM as a valuable pedagogical approach for adult group piano classes. As is routinely used in strategic business planning, a SWOT analysis will be conducted to determine the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the RMM movement within the piano pedagogy field. A relatively new (and …
The Integration Of Performance Practice And Stylistic Understanding In The Realization Of Schubert's Sonata D. 845, I. Moderato, Becca Hanson
Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts
Franz Schubert’s Piano Sonata in A minor, D. 845 was written in 1825 and is considered to be one of his late works. The first movement shows Schubert’s mature and unique approach to Sonata Form while reflecting his song, dance, and orchestral writing styles. To develop an artistic and informed conception of this piece, a seasoned performer must have an approach that integrates numerous areas of music scholarship, including a stylistic comprehension of the music and its composer. One complication in interpreting this movement originates from the inconsistency between its original instrumentation—the fortepiano—and the most probable modern choice of instrumentation—the …

The Sounds Of Home: A Composition Portfolio, Paul Gabriel L. Cosme
The Sounds Of Home: A Composition Portfolio, Paul Gabriel L. Cosme
Music Honors Projects
What does home sound like? I have spent most of my recent life outside my homeland, the Philippines, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, and this question of what home is has become a persistent thought, if not, a necessary inquiry. This composition portfolio attempts to answer that question in three varying pieces. The first, The Sounds of Home, is a string quartet in three movements where each one tells a personal story by invoking Filipino folk and indigenous themes. The second, Commuting in Manila, is a wind septet that sonically emulates the commuting experience in Manila from the …

Chasing Expression: Tracing Notated And Performative Devices That Create A Bel Canto Style At The Piano, Paul Zeller
Chasing Expression: Tracing Notated And Performative Devices That Create A Bel Canto Style At The Piano, Paul Zeller
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Creative Work, and Performance
Discussions of interpretation and performance practice often address specific historical periods, offering analyses of musical practices within a predetermined set of dates, such as ornamentation in the Baroque period, articulation as applied in the Classical era, and phrasing “the long line” in the Romantic era. Such a sectionalized approach yields many valuable insights on how to perform the music of specific composers, but it fails to consider the development of notational practices and performative idioms across different historical eras. Studying the ways in which musicians of different eras applied the same set of musical devices within a specific style could …

Transcribing Ragtime For Guitar, William Brehm
Transcribing Ragtime For Guitar, William Brehm
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
Classic ragtime piano solos can be made playable on guitar. The guitar, of course, is home to capabilities and limitations alien to the piano, and we start by trying to appreciate them fully. Unlike the piano, the guitar is amenable to a variety of disparate techniques, many of which can be applied to ragtime transcription. Ultimately, the author's technique- essentially classical guitar- is assumed a basis for transcription, and a generalized technique for transcription, especially considerate of the ragtime style, is presented.
Memorizing Music: A Problem That A Pianist Has To Face, University Of Denver
Memorizing Music: A Problem That A Pianist Has To Face, University Of Denver
Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship
As we all know, now the piano is usually an instrument that needs to be played by memory. Except piano ensemble pieces, most solo piano pieces are required to be performed by memory, even including piano concerto works. For a long time, many pianists have had mixed attitudes towards memorizing music.
Re-Assessing Rachmaninoff's Legacy: The Piano Concertos And Evolution Of His Musical Style, Varazdat Khachatryan
Re-Assessing Rachmaninoff's Legacy: The Piano Concertos And Evolution Of His Musical Style, Varazdat Khachatryan
Dissertations
This thesis explores the evolution of Sergey Rachmaninoff’s five major piano/orchestral works and their revisions, which span most of his career. Composing at the turn of the twentieth century, which was marked by several revolutions, two world wars and changes in musical tastes from romanticism to modernism, Rachmaninoff was often referred to as a ‘conservative’ composer. However, contrary to this categorisation, throughout his musical life he developed a style that has become unique and revolutionary in its own right. This thesis aims to unravel the key arguments at the heart of the conservative-progressive debate and shed new light on Rachmaninoff’s …
How Music Theory Sequencing Can Improve Classroom Management And Attention Issues In Beginner Students' Piano Lessons, Greta Dilyte
How Music Theory Sequencing Can Improve Classroom Management And Attention Issues In Beginner Students' Piano Lessons, Greta Dilyte
Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship
This research has been inspired by an observation of the different music-theoretical concepts and their sequencing in different piano methods. After working in three different countries as a piano teacher I wanted to explore differences and similarities as well as improve my lesson engagement level by beginning students, which is admittedly the most complicated level to teach mainly due to the focus maintenance issues. This is the evidence of my preliminary research which can be used and explored by any piano teacher who is interested in incorporating music theory concepts in their classroom, to help with attention issues, more all-rounded …
