Springsteen: In The American Tradition, Alex Mcdonough
Springsteen: In The American Tradition, Alex Mcdonough
Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works
Springsteen’s music serves as a platform for not only the working poor, but also the pariahs of American society. Like other classic American singer-songwriters, Springsteen uses his music to explore tragedy in the American life, imbuing each song with a quiet, sometimes darkly humorous humanity. Through his songs, Springsteen has defined an altogether different type of American story, one that weaves tragedy, comedy, and the tedious minutiae of daily life. Springsteen considers each element of every story he tells to be distinct and important in its own way, creating a sense of purpose for even the lowest of the low.

Piracy, Policy, And Pandora: Outdated Copyright In A Digital World, Stephanie Caress
Piracy, Policy, And Pandora: Outdated Copyright In A Digital World, Stephanie Caress
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
This project examines how current copyright laws and digital distribution practices in music can be improved for both the creator and the consumer. The laws that govern our digital atmosphere, and thus a large portion of music distribution, are outdated and cause a wide variety of problems for both artists and fans. To create a comprehensive picture and establish the scope of this problem, I start by outlining the process a song goes through from when it is written to when it is in the hands, or rather ears, of listeners. From there, copyright laws are entwined with this process. …

A Generalized Intervallic Approach To Metric Conflict In Liszt, Robert L. Wells
A Generalized Intervallic Approach To Metric Conflict In Liszt, Robert L. Wells
Music
The music of Franz Liszt has become widely recognized by music theorists for its harmonic and formal innovations. However, little attention has been given to adventurous rhythmic/metric aspects of Liszt’s compositional style: specifically, he frequently incorporates rich metric structures in which the notated metric layer, indicated by time signatures and bars, and heard metric layer, given by cues in the sounding music, are locked in an evolving conflict. To model such interactions, this article develops a new analytical system based on Lewin’s generalized interval system (GIS) concept, constructing a new three-component metric direct product GIS called Met. The article …
Toward A Multiple Mentor Model In Music Education, Kristina R. Weimer
Toward A Multiple Mentor Model In Music Education, Kristina R. Weimer
School of Music Faculty Publications and Presentations
Literature supports the importance of mentoring relationships in making meaningful contributions to novice teacher induction, and that especially important in the relationship is matching mentor/mentee by subject and grade level and in close proximity. The physical location of mentors to mentees and their availability impacts the relationship. Proximity is necessary to view the mentor as accessible and provide opportunities for interactions during the school day.
In music education, matching mentor/mentee by subject and grade level and in close proximity can be challenging. Because of music's specialization, music teachers are often the only one in their building. I previously examined two …
