Songsters And Film Scores: Civil War Music And American Memory, Ari Marie Weinberg
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This thesis consists of two separate essays both concerned with affect, memory, and music of the Civil War. The first examines the production, use, and purpose of a booklet called The Soldier’s Friend, with an emphasis on the mission of its producer, the United States Sanitary Commission and the needs of the readers of the booklet. In addition, I highlight the explicit connections that the organization made in this document between health and music by bringing cultural and psychological theories to the study of music. While many scholars have emphasized the ubiquity and importance of music during the War (and …

Storyville: Discourses In Southern Musicians' Autobiographies, Matthew Daniel Sutton
Storyville: Discourses In Southern Musicians' Autobiographies, Matthew Daniel Sutton
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This study utilizes many of the tools of the literary critic to identify and analyze the discursive conventions in autobiographies by American vernacular musicians who came of age in the American South during the era of enforced racial segregation. Through this textual analysis, we can appreciate this seemingly amorphous collection of books as a continuing conversation, where descriptions of the South and its music by turns confirm, contradict, and complicate each other. Ultimately, the dozens of southern musician autobiographies published in the last fifty years engage in a valuable and revealing dialogue, creating a virtual "Storyville"; ostensibly disparate works share …

The Blues And Jazz In Albert Murray's Fiction: A Study In The Tradition Of Stylization, Jacquelynne Jones Modeste
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The use of the blues as a critical theory and as a literary model for the crafting of fiction opens new possibilities for both intellectual and artistic exploration. Reflecting the power of human agency amidst antagonism, the blues is the music of personal triumph over the brutality of circumstances despite any change in condition. The music's emphasis on improvisation reveals human agency because through instrumentation, singing, stylistic nuances, audience participation and/or venue individuals transform perceived or imagined woefulness into hopefulness. Studying the blues and its cultural legacy is significant in identifying the mechanisms by which individuals and ultimately entire communities …

Evaluating Music Teachers In Virginia: Practices And Perceptions, Charles Maranzano
Evaluating Music Teachers In Virginia: Practices And Perceptions, Charles Maranzano
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this study was to investigate current evaluation practices in Virginia and to assess the impact of public school evaluation upon teachers of music. Traditional methods for the evaluation of teachers appear to have limited applicability for the majority of elementary and secondary school educators engaged in the field of performing arts, due primarily to the specialized nature of their respective teaching disciplines. Educational administrators charged with the responsibility for evaluating personnel confront an additional challenge when compelled to apply general models that are not suited to the highly complex world of performing arts instruction. Music teachers and …

Two Steps From The Blues: Creating Discourse And Constructing Canons In Blues Criticism, John M. Dougan
Two Steps From The Blues: Creating Discourse And Constructing Canons In Blues Criticism, John M. Dougan
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This dissertation examines the development of blues criticism in its myriad forms from the 1920s to 1990s, its role in the emergence of a blues discourse and history, and the codification of a blues canon. I analyze blues discourse principally as the creation of critics, historians, and musicologists, but also as the result of series of complex, imbricated relationships among writers, musicians, fans, record collectors, and independent entrepreneurs.;Beginning in the 1920s, I outline a pre-history of blues discourse by examining the metamorphosis of the blues as a cultural text shaped by the folklore scholarship, criticism and reportage in the popular …

Part-Time Music Faculty In Selected Senior Institutions Of Higher Education In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Thomas Ward Forrest
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this study was to investigate part-time music faculty in higher education in Virginia. Part-timers are a significant part of music programs in Virginia where they make up fifty-three percent of the music faculty and outnumber the music full-timers. The results of this study suggest that perhaps the discipline of music may use more part-timers than any other discipline.;While the body of literature on part-timers in general is small, scholars such as Howard P. Tuckman, Judith M. Gappa and David W. Leslie have begun significant research and reporting. The literature on part-time music faculty, however, is virtually non-existent, …
