Musical Similarity As Conceived By "Avid Recreational Music Listeners", Jason R. Neal

Jason R. Neal

Over the past century, sociocultural and technological developments have fostered the emergence of what Peterson and Kern (1996) call “omnivorous” music listeners, as well as non-hierarchical forms of categorization like tagging. Furthermore, techniques employed within many recommender systems indirectly continue to reflect genre-based categorization and taste. This paper will provide an overview of the contexts in which such trends and tensions have emerged. It will also consider prospects for incorporating more actively nuanced dimensions of similarity into recommender systems, which could …

Art Imitates Life: Violence And The Music Of Metal And Rap, Gordon A. Crews, Angela D. Crews

Gordon A Crews

The purpose of this presentation is to explore the similar evolution's of Black Metal and Gangsta Rap musical genres. The authors argue the following similarities exist: 1) different cultures and statements being made, but violence is a common thread (outcomes of violence and societal responses), 2) the music and lyrics in both reflect their cultures, histories, and lives, and, 3) there is a strong musical and lyrical expression of violence related to the behavioral expression of violence among the artists and the fans in both genres. Finally, the authors question whether art imitates life or life imitates art.

Vladimir Horowitz And Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2 In B-Flat Major : 4/8/1948 With Bruno Walter And The New York Philharmonic, Diane Napert

Diane Napert

This PowerPoint was used during a presentation on Vladimir Horowitz and his unpublished recording of Brahms' piano concerto no. 2.  This was given at the Association for Recorded Sound Collections Meeting in Kansas City, Missouri in 2013. I was excited that I was able to find a recording of an interview of Horowitz stating Bruno Walter was his favorite conductor, though it is hard to hear. He made this statement with his wife Wanda in the room, the daughter of the famous conductor Arturo Toscanini, and it drew laughter.

The Historical Sound Recordings Collection at Yale has several very rare early recordings of zarzuelas.  These are hard to find, even in Europe, so cataloging them allowed them to be "discovered" and enjoyed again.
