Les Folies D'Espagne And The Euphonium Player, Ming Li Goldston Mar 2023

Les Folies D'Espagne And The Euphonium Player, Ming Li Goldston

Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper analyzes how a transcription of Les Folies d’Espagne, a 17th century viola da gamba work by French Baroque composer Marin Marais, was constructed for the euphonium, a brass instrument which emerged a century-and-a-half later. Philippe Fritsch, the arranger of the 2002 euphonium transcription, made several notable departures from Marais’s source material—the most obvious being the omission of twenty of the original thirty-two variations. Fritsch’s arrangement is considered through the lenses of Marais’s compositional purposes and context, the removal of the euphonium from the antiquated viola da gamba, and the pedagogical significance Marais’s work would have …

The Purpose And Process Of Commissioning New Music For Low Brass Instruments: A Guide, Michael Kennard Waddell Jan 2022

The Purpose And Process Of Commissioning New Music For Low Brass Instruments: A Guide, Michael Kennard Waddell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The euphonium, trombone, and tuba do not have the breath of solo and chamber music repertoire that other instruments such as the piano or violin do. The majority of works being written for these instruments today is being written via direct commissions and commission consortiums. This research analyzes the importance of expanding the repertoire of these instruments, along with detailed guidance on starting a consortium project and seeing it through to completion. The author, and interviewees Frank Gulino, Adam Frey, and George Alberti, detail their experiences working on consortium projects, and their views on the ethical importance of advancing the …

Embouchure Theory In Practice, Alden Smith Jan 2019

Embouchure Theory In Practice, Alden Smith

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

In the instrumental band world, the horn, euphonium, and tuba are considered “switch-over” instruments. They are put in this category because students usually switch to these instruments from their starting instrument. Though they may not be offered to students as a starting instrument, their tones create a balanced and mature band sound. However, it is difficult to properly teach these instruments due to logistical complications; the music educator is responsible for simultaneously teaching the switch-over students a new instrument, while continuing the education of students who did not switch over.

Sound on the horn, euphonium, and tuba is produced by …

The Intersection Of Manufacturing Technologies And School Music Programs, Leslie Prunier May 2017

The Intersection Of Manufacturing Technologies And School Music Programs, Leslie Prunier

University Scholar Projects

The objective of this project is to design and manufacture a musical instrument, a marching baritone horn, out of plastic. It is constructed out of both PVC pipe and 3D-printed components. Utilizing this project’s documentation, a high school student could use a 3D printer and other basic tools to make their own musical instrument for a fraction of the cost of purchasing one. This documentation will produce a horn tuned in the key of B flat with one functioning valve, and suggestions for future work to make the other two valves functional as well.

The Origins And Development Of The Euphonium Concerto With Brass Band, Joel M. Collier May 2016

The Origins And Development Of The Euphonium Concerto With Brass Band, Joel M. Collier

Dissertations, 2014-2019

Since shortly after its invention, the euphonium has been utilized as a solo instrument, both in chamber music settings with piano, and with large ensembles such as brass bands and wind bands. However, it was not until the composition of Joseph Horovitz’s Euphonium Concerto in 1972 that the euphonium was genuinely regarded as a serious solo instrument in the brass band, capable of performing large-scale, substantial works.

In the following two decades, several composers wrote concerti for euphonium and brass band, each building on the technical demands of their predecessors. Their contributions established the basis of the genre, and also …
