Tuning Into The Future: Informal Learning And Music Education, Ruth Wright, Carol Beynon, B. A. Younker, V. Meredith, Jennifer Hutchison, Leslie Linton

When adolescents are engaged in learning, research has shown a decrease in alcohol and drug use, higher retention rates and fewer failures throughout high school, lower rates of depression as well as lower rates of anti-social and criminal behaviours. Attention to student engagement with a priority on 21st century learning skills requires the examination of various pedagogies, including using informal learning practices as the foundation for instruction with adolescents in schools. This pilot project targets Grade 7 to 10 students in two school settings where adolescent engagement is a priority; it examines the viability of implementing informal learning practices within …

There’S Got To Be Some Kind Of Way Out Of Here: Music, Information, Categorization, And Commodification, Jason R. Neal Oct 2013

There’S Got To Be Some Kind Of Way Out Of Here: Music, Information, Categorization, And Commodification, Jason R. Neal

Jason R. Neal

The increasing ubiquity of digital technologies has facilitated the merging of media content and their metadata within multiple indexing and retrieval systems. In the case of recorded music, individuals can download and store digitized audio (as well as video) content on computers and portable media devices. Conversely, with the emergence of social networking platforms, users can share files, as well as textual content (e.g. comments, reviews, and tags), by uploading them to Websites with music-related content. Ideally, these conditions allow users to connect with others who share similar musical interests, to interact with a greater diversity of music than in …

Robert Burns, James Johnson, And The Manuscript Of "The German Lairdie", Patrick G. Scott Sep 2013

Robert Burns, James Johnson, And The Manuscript Of "The German Lairdie", Patrick G. Scott

Patrick Scott

Reports, illustrates, and assesses a fragment of manuscript music now in the G. Ross Roy Collection at the University of South Carolina, for Burns's song "The German Lairdie," headed in Burns's hand, and possibly with the music in his hand also. A note with the fragment, which was exhibited as Burns's autograph in 1896, states that it had been sent by Burns to the Edinburgh editor and publisher James Johnson, for inclusion in his Scots Musical Museum.

Salzburg Chorbuch W.B. Xiv Magnificat Traditions In Post-Tridentine Salzburg, C. Michael Porter Aug 2013

Salzburg Chorbuch W.B. Xiv Magnificat Traditions In Post-Tridentine Salzburg, C. Michael Porter

Michael Porter

The cultural and political climate of post-Tridentine Salzburg was transformed in 1587 with the election of prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Reitenau (1559–1617). This Italianate leader, due to his charisma and strong theological education at Rome's Collegium Germanicum, ushered in a new era of Catholic reform. In addition to reforming the regional Salzburg rite into the approved Roman rite, Wolf Dietrich desired to recreate the artistic environments of his Italian alma mater through the patronage of several musical collections. Despite these dedications by composers whose works are representative of late sixteenth-century Italian styles, a closer examination of the surviving works in …

Wilho Saari: The Tale Behind The Talent, Carl Rahkonen Jul 2013

Wilho Saari: The Tale Behind The Talent, Carl Rahkonen

Carl Rahkonen

[Wilho Saari Jr.] is an abbreviation of the old family name, Leppäsaari, who trace their origins to the village of Halsua, in the Perho River Valley of Finland. This area of Finland is particularly noted for kantele playing. Wilho's grandfather Matti Leppäsaari (1867-1898) was the son of Anna Liisa Kalliokoski (1842-1891) who was the daughter of Kreeta Haapasalo (18131893), perhaps the most renowned kantele player ever in Finland. That makes Wilho Jr. a fifth-generation kantele player, directly related to some of the greatest kantele players of Finland.
Most of Wilho's compositions are for 36-string kantele, but he has also composed …

Martti Nisonen: Composer Of The Keweenaw, Carl Rahkonen May 2013

Martti Nisonen: Composer Of The Keweenaw, Carl Rahkonen

Carl Rahkonen

Correspondence in the collection shows that after Nisonen died Dec. 5, 1946 most of his original manuscripts were in the hands of former students. Only through great efforts in contacting these students did the Finnish American Historical Archive get back many of his music manuscripts. Suomi College presidents and archivists corresponded with former students. They even advertised for the return of this music in Finnish American newspapers. These efforts began in the early 1960s and really took hold with a Nisonen concert in conjunction with the American bicentennial in 1976, and a large memorial concert and scholarly panel in 1982. …

Listening Origins, Habits, And Habitus, Mark Zanter May 2013

Listening Origins, Habits, And Habitus, Mark Zanter

Mark Zanter

Listening habits offer us insight into music’s affect on us as individuals, artists, and as members of the various communities we inhabit. Using the lens of phenomenology to assess and explore the nature of the listening experience, I will investigate recent writings on music perception, and modes of listening focusing on their use: by individuals in everyday life; in perceiving musical works and the role of music in multi-media; and in generating habitus—social codes in the musical cultures we inhabit. Once the notions of habits and habitus have been established, I will posit that listening, in the context of new …

Anarchy In The Unity: Compositional And Aesthetic Tensions In Mauricio Kagel's Antithese Für Einen Darsteller Mit Elektronischen Und Öffentlichen Klängen (1962), Makoto Mikawa May 2013

Anarchy In The Unity: Compositional And Aesthetic Tensions In Mauricio Kagel's Antithese Für Einen Darsteller Mit Elektronischen Und Öffentlichen Klängen (1962), Makoto Mikawa

Makoto Mikawa

In 1962 the Argentine-German composer Mauricio Kagel (1931-2008) completed an innovative multimedia/interdisciplinary piece, Antithese für einen Darsteller mit elektronischen und öffentlichen Klängen. The unique compositional style and formal structure consisting of heterogeneous compositional components reflected his profound insights into issues inherent in postwar avant-garde music. Kagel remarked strikingly that “anarchy in the piece was omnipresent.” Indeed, his use of the term ‘anarchy’ is a keystone not only of the structural features of Antithese, but also of Kagel’s aesthetic of music in the piece. The present study seeks to reveal Kagel’s idea of anarchy in musical context and how he attempts …

Music Of Worship And The Sanctification Of The Believer, Jonathan D. Twining Apr 2013

Music Of Worship And The Sanctification Of The Believer, Jonathan D. Twining

Jonathan D Twining

Because of its importance in the life of a believer, music should aid in the sanctification process. The debate concerning the use of contemporary music in church worship contexts arises from the belief that musical styles can either encourage or discourage the sanctification of a believer by influencing emotions. The efficiency of music for the purpose of sanctification should be considered by the listener. Music that is associated with unbiblical influences and intentions may not be fit for use in worship settings.

It also, looks upon the court practices and the law in dealing with interference with the course of justice. The paper also analyses the rights of the …

Something Worse: Frank Capra's Populist Noir And Springsteen's "The River", Michael E. Kaufmann, Michele R. Devinney Feb 2013

Something Worse: Frank Capra's Populist Noir And Springsteen's "The River", Michael E. Kaufmann, Michele R. Devinney

Michael E. Kaufmann

In Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town, Springsteen relies on film noir imagery to relay the cinematic yet stark lives of his protagonists. By The River he takes a more populist turn, but unlike director Frank Capra, he explores the dark side of populism that subsumes the desire of individuals to the larger will of the group. With each holiday season comes the viewing of the classic Capra film "It's a Wonderful Life," and the sentimental message that every person's life has value. But hidden more deeply is another message, a somewhat darker one, that in …
