The following dissertation seeks to provide a detailed introduction to the musical language and body of work of the American saxophonist Lee Konitz. It aims to investigate and gain an understanding of the musical language of one of the jazz idioms most unique improvisers, and will do this by firstly discussing Kanitz's life and career in order to contextualize his music. The work will then examine his major musical influences in some detail, to gain an understanding of how his highly original style developed. A Method For Electric Bass Improvisation Via A Detailed Analysis Of The Improvisational Techniques Of Jaco Pastorius From 1967-1968, Aaron Spiers

This thesis/dissertation is an exploration into Jaco Pastorius' approach to improvisation via detailed analysis of seven selected transcriptions between the years 1975-80. This dissertation also analyses Pastorius' development as a performer, highlighting the many techniques he pioneered on the electric bass guitar from a historic perspective focusing on the years 1967-74. The final chapter of this dissertation presents a series of etudes that are designed to assist an advanced performer assimilate selected aspects of Pastorius' harmonic approach to improvisation.

Bernard Herrmann (1911-1975) has long been regarded as one of the most important composers of film music. Emerging during a time when the majority of film scores worked primarily with the physical action onscreen or what was immediately obvious in the dramatic narrative, Herrmann's innovative compositional style instead focused on the unconscious and the psychological states at work. The New String Quartet : The Evolution Of The Hyperquartet, Rachael Dease

This article explores the phenomenon of the rejuvenation of the string quartet in contemporary musical culture through the use of electronics. I will discuss how recent works; including my own works Spiral (1999) and Seven Ballads til Dawn (2007) have adopted some features of popular music and new technology, while still maintaining the integrity and flavour of their classical heritage. I will use several different examples to show the ways in which a quartet can become a "hyperquartet" through the use of amplification, effects processors and playback.

This dissertation serves to give an exposition of the origins, rehearsal and performance practices for minimalist music with particular attention paid to Music for Eighteen Musicians by Steve Reich. It contains interviews with performers of this work and attempts to define the underlying principles of minimalist music with particular reference to concentration and tempo. Rehearsal procedures are discussed as well as issues such as stamina and acoustics. The final section is dedicated to common mistakes and a reflection on the work from those who have performed it.

There are a number of characteristics that distinguish acoustic and electronic music. The most apparent difference is the nature of their sound sources, but there is also substantial variation in the compositional process and in the techniques available to composers of each medium. This study is centred around music and music-making in Perth, Western Australia, from 1900-1950. It examines various parts of Perth's music history using both primary and secondary sources. Chapter one uses secondary sources, both musical and non-musical, to present an exposition on musical life in Perth in this period. This dissertation represents a handbook designed to assist singers performing the role of Tytania in Britten' s opera A Midsummer Night's Dream. It explores the historical, literary, cultural, and musical contexts to the music and the drama.
