Youth Musicians’ Executive Functioning And Its Impact On Emotional And Behavioral Health, Michael A. Tate Jan 2022

Youth Musicians’ Executive Functioning And Its Impact On Emotional And Behavioral Health, Michael A. Tate

Dissertations and Theses

A growing body of neuroscience literature shows that music promotes brain development, as learning a music instrument involves multiple brain regions and neurocognitive systems. In partnership with a non-profit organization with a mission to strengthen New York City communities through music education programs, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of music training on children’s executive functioning (EF), as well as emotional and behavioral outcomes. We hypothesized that (i) children’s EF would develop more rapidly with exposure to the program; (ii) the intensity of practice would be associated with rate of growth of children’s EF, emotion regulation and behavior; (iii) …

Sonata Form In Beethoven's Sixth Symphony, Michele Kishlansky Jan 2014

Sonata Form In Beethoven's Sixth Symphony, Michele Kishlansky

Dissertations and Theses

"Charles Rosen, in his book, Sonata Forms, discusses the ways in which sonata form elevated pure instrumental music, gripping the attention of audiences “without the seductions of spectacle, the sentiments of poetry, and the emotions of drama, or even the dazzling technical virtuosity of singer and performer.”1 Sonata forms accomplished this by providing a clear analogy for dramatic action, containing an identifiable climax—a moment of maximum dramatic tension to which the first part of the work pushes towards and which the composer systematically resolves. Furthermore, Rosen writes: It is a closed form, without the static frame of ternary form; it …

Respectability And The Modern Jazz Quartet; Some Cultural Aspects Of Its Image And Legacy As Seen Through The Press, Carla Marie Rupp

Dissertations and Theses

"The Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ) was a noted jazz ensemble whose original members—John Lewis (piano and director), Milt “Bags” Jackson (vibraphone), Ray Brown (bass) and Kenny “Klook” Clarke (drums)—first performed together in Dizzy Gillespie’s big band in 1946.1 Lewis (1920-2005), Jackson (1923-1999), Brown (1926- 2002), and Clarke (1914-1985) first recorded as a group, calling themselves the Milt Jackson Quartet, in 1951-2. By the time the first recordings of the group under the name Modern Jazz Quartet were released in 1952, Percy Heath (1923-2005) had already replaced Brown as bassist. By 1954, the group had begun performing regularly in nightclubs and …

The Critical Reception Of Richard Wagner's Tristan Und Isolde In The English-Speaking World, Thomas Rizzuto Jan 2010

The Critical Reception Of Richard Wagner's Tristan Und Isolde In The English-Speaking World, Thomas Rizzuto

Dissertations and Theses

Few operas have sparked as much controversy, in as many places, as Richard Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. History shows that during the latter half of the 19th century spirited discussion and outright debate follwed the work to every new city that dared to produce it. This paper will focus on the critical reception of the Wagner's historic music drama in two such cities: London and New York. By examining newspaper reviews, journal articles, and other musical writings of the time, we will develop an understanding of the divergent reactions to each premiere. We will examine the cultural and musical factors …
