Modernizing And Diversifying Western's Audio Engineering Curriculum: First Stage, Kyle Haddad
Modernizing And Diversifying Western's Audio Engineering Curriculum: First Stage, Kyle Haddad
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
This was the first stage in a much larger study designed to update the audio engineering curriculum at Western University, to reflect modern trends and to diversify beyond the UK 1970s prog rock bias of traditional curriculum. An undergraduate student was hired from within the Popular Music Studies program here at Western University to work in the studio for the summer, and to provide recommendations for change in studio design at the end fo the summer based on that work. The student worked on his own material, and engineered record sessions for a PhD candidate currently at work on a …

Hard Feelings: A Musical Exploration Of Plutchik's Primary Human Emotions, Sarah Killian
Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects
The purpose of this project was to explore Robert Plutchik’s eight primary human emotions - joy, sadness, trust, disgust, fear, anger, surprise, and anticipation - through three musical lenses: key selection and chord/rhythm choices; lyrics; and production and arrangement choices made for each of the eight demo recordings.

Handel’S Messiah: Stepping Stones Between Now And Then, Ariela Policastro, Emma Boze, Nathan Maras
2020 Festschrift: Georg Frideric Handel's "Messiah"
Original style and intent of period music can often be lost as modern performers attempt to recreate a centuries-old composition. In this paper Messiah by George Frideric Handel is discussed, offering insight in how to perform this piece while still honoring the full integrity of what the composer intended. Through an examination of past and current performances and opinions, it becomes clear that there are many distinct differences in ways this oratorio has been performed including stylistic choices, instrumentation, religious affiliation, and more.

National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference
Willowcreek Middle School in Portage Indiana is not your typical alternative school. We offer trauma informed practices in place of student expulsions. A safe structured environment, reduced class time, academic strategies, mindfulness, yoga, and community service, all help to provide the educational and social/emotional support necessary to help students at risk reach their potential and eventually transition back to the traditional classroom.
Ambassador Of Cajun Music: Jimmy C. Newman, 1927-2014, Michael Green
Ambassador Of Cajun Music: Jimmy C. Newman, 1927-2014, Michael Green
History Faculty Research
In February 1765, the first boat with French-speaking refugees from Acadia in Nova Scotia arrived in the present-day state of Louisiana, where their description of themselves as Acadians changed, just as regional dialects change, into Cajuns. Their departure was part of what one historian of Cajun culture calls an “ethnic cleansing.” The British had acquired French Canada two years before and deported the Catholic Acadians to other colonies; a group of them chose instead to head for what they thought was French territory. It turned out that the Treaty of Paris of 1763, which had conveyed French Canada from France …

Júlio Ribeiro Alves
Gioachino Rossini’s (1792-1868) meteoric rise in the early 19th-century international opera scene is well known. Over the course of 19 years (1810-29) he composed the music for 39 operas that were produced across Europe and as far away as New York City (1825). As Rossini’s melodies became the common currency of musical life, they were featured in all manner of alternative settings such as these arrangements by two important artists from Parisian society, flutist Jean-Louis Tulou (1786-1865) and guitarist Ferdinando Carulli (1770-1841). Both the flute and the guitar enjoyed great popularity among amateur bourgeoisie and serious artists alike, …

Student Scholar Showcase
Known as the ‘King of Swing’, clarinetist and band leader Benny Goodman (1909-1986) threatened the Nazi cause during WWII. With intent of improving music pedagogy, the purpose of this research was to investigate swing music during World War II. The particular problems of this study were to: (1) identify how the swing music of Benny Goodman (1909-1986) influenced adolescents in the United States of America, United Kingdom, and Germany; (2) explore the Nazi party view on ‘swing’ music of the era; (3) examine how the music of Charlie and his Orchestra became used as a tool for Nazi propaganda; and …

Springsteen: In The American Tradition, Alex Mcdonough
Springsteen: In The American Tradition, Alex Mcdonough
Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works
Springsteen’s music serves as a platform for not only the working poor, but also the pariahs of American society. Like other classic American singer-songwriters, Springsteen uses his music to explore tragedy in the American life, imbuing each song with a quiet, sometimes darkly humorous humanity. Through his songs, Springsteen has defined an altogether different type of American story, one that weaves tragedy, comedy, and the tedious minutiae of daily life. Springsteen considers each element of every story he tells to be distinct and important in its own way, creating a sense of purpose for even the lowest of the low.

A Glance At Astor Piazzolla's Histoire Du Tango: Lecture Recital, Elizabeth Ritter
Honors Projects
This project is a lecture recital including the performance of four musical works from different countries as well as a lecture Astor Piazzolla's Histoire Du Tango. The four pieces performed in this recital were Eldin Burton's Sonatina for flute and piano, the first movement of Astor Piazzolla's Histoire Du Tango, Hirota's Shikararete, and Bela Bartok's Romanian Folk Dances for piccolo and piano. Before performing the Piazzolla, there was a lecture which included the teaching of the musical aspects of the tango within this piece, a short biography of Piazzolla, and a historical look at the four movements of this piece. …

Two Soundpieces - Soundpiece I: Tripartite (Recording), Gary Smart, Michael Bovenzi
Gary Smart
I was a student at Indiana University when I wrote Two Soundpieces (1969). The piece was originally written for a friend, tenor saxophonist, Robert Hores, who asked for a piece that used the tenor’s idiomatic “illegitimate” sounds. It was soon picked up by avant garde saxophonist Ken Dorn who performed the piece several times in various new music venues. I moved to Germany in 1970 and soon after lost much of my personal music library, including this piece, in a Cologne warehouse fire. At the time I had just a few copies of most of my works….and suddenly they were …

Piano Sonata Iii. Turtle Dreams Of Flight (Recording), Gary Smart, Yukino Miyake
Gary Smart
This slow movement was directly inspired by a dream. I enter the mind of the turtle. I dream my turtle self into other dimensions, where I think and feel without the use of language. This pseudo-waltz scherzo moves more than once from very slow to very fast, from low to high register, from simple to complex with an urgent, yet disguised purpose. Like my dream, this is a mysterious drama indeed, as is life itself. In the end one is still left with a question, perhaps Ives’ Unanswered Question. For me this piece is symbolic of an inexorable desire for …

Piano Sonata Iv. Chez Garuda (Recording), Gary Smart, Yukino Miyake
Gary Smart
Garuda is a mythical bird-god. His statue in Sanjusangendo is fierce and menacing. The figure seemed almost comical in its ferocity. The Garuda I saw was a crazed Hellboy musician stamping out a beat, playing wild licks on his flute. But it seemed he might also be capable of the most inspired lyricism. If so, his would be formidable music-making, no doubt. This movement is my reaction to that image. Here my jazz background becomes apparent. Bebop, boogie-woogie, Bill Evans lyricism…all this and more is mixed together in a swirling cartoon world of expression. The movement is loosely cast in …
Piano Sonata I. Kimnara’S Blessing (Recording), Gary Smart, Yukino Miyake
Piano Sonata I. Kimnara’S Blessing (Recording), Gary Smart, Yukino Miyake
Gary Smart
The first and last movements here are named after deities in the Japanese Buddist-Hindu canon. I was inspired by a visit to the Sanjusangendo shrine in Kyoto, where 1000 exquisite ancient wood statues have stood for many centuries. There I saw Kimnara, a winged female spirit, a gentle celestial musician. My evocation of her music is ritualistic. The piece begins and ends with an “a-men” and features an abundance of thematic material which includes lyrical expression, as well as harp-like flourishes and most notably, exuberant sections based on the ringing metallic sounds and rhythmic gestures of the Balinese gamelan orchestra. …
Piano Sonata Ii. Moonspinner (Recording), Gary Smart, Yukino Miyake
Piano Sonata Ii. Moonspinner (Recording), Gary Smart, Yukino Miyake
Gary Smart
This playful, virtuosic movement is evocative of American folk music, particularly Appalachian fiddle music and song. The fiddle music is abstracted, certainly, yet the figurations are idiomatic. The folk song, which interrupts the “instrumental” music twice, is original. A hint of it appears in the “working out’ at the center of the form and also in the high register at the very close of the movement. The title, “Moonspinner” is named after an old-fashioned hand made wooden toy I once saw in North Carolina. I always promised myself I would write a piece with this title.

This project is an outgrowth of a larger project that involves the eventual compilation of a series of Italian madrigals into a modern performing edition. The purpose of this project was to transcribe and edit a madrigal from Carlo Grossi’s L’Anfione musiche da camera or per tavola (Venice, 1675) in order to better understand and be able to perform an Italian madrigal as it might have been done in the late seventeenth century. Through a process of research, examination and transcription, I was able to not only to transcribe Grossi’s music into modern notation but was also able to also …
