Derek Walcott: A Caribbean Life By Bruce King (Book Review), Daryl Cumber Dance
English Faculty Publications
In Another Life Derek Walcott wrote, "I had entered the house of literature as a houseboy"; Jamaican poet Mervyn Morris signified on this image in his The Pond when he declared, "And these are my rooms now." The journey that Walcott makes from "houseboy" to master/ruler/owner of the house of literature (the Nobel Laureate is frequently acclaimed the greatest poet writing in the English language) is painstakingly detailed in Bruce King's tome Derek Walcott: A Caribbean Life.
A Tale Of Two Authors: Valenzuela And Borges , Sharon Magnarelli
A Tale Of Two Authors: Valenzuela And Borges , Sharon Magnarelli
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
Although Luisa Valenzuela and Borges were friends for many years, it is only recently that we find traces of that friendship in her narrative. "La calesita" and "El otro libro," published in 1998 and 1999 respectively, evoke many of the elements we find in Borges's narrative. The latter story, which is the main focus of this study, employs nearly all the narrative elements we have come to associate with the Argentine master. Nonetheless, a single sign is changed as Borges's male characters are replaced by females in Valenzuela's work. The end result is a tribute to Borges but one that …

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
This paper analyzes the influence of postmodernism in Paloma Díaz-Mas's feminist approach through two short stories, "The World According to Valdés," and "In Search of a Portrait." The political situation after Franco's death embraced democracy which allowed writers to pay more attention to intellectual concerns. Women writers steered the radical positions of the 1970s toward a more philosophical and intellectual analysis of reality and artistic expression during the eighties. In these two short stories, Díaz-Mas addresses women's issues by questioning the scope of modernist and humanist views. She criticizes the modernist concept of unity (text/identity) pointing out the discrimination that …
The Construction Of History In The Folds Of Family History In The Novel Song Lost In West Buenos Aires By María Rosa Lojo, Zulema Moret
The Construction Of History In The Folds Of Family History In The Novel Song Lost In West Buenos Aires By María Rosa Lojo, Zulema Moret
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
The novels written by María Rosa Lojo strongly reflect a specific preoccupation with the rewriting of history from new perspectives that are related to so-called postmodernism. This is the case with Canción perdida en Buenos Aires al Oeste (1987). This work attempts to articulate a reading of the "private" at a crossroads with the history of the country and of other countries (Argentina/Spain). It is a novel of exiles, from the exile of the Neira family from the Franco dictatorship in the forties to the particular exiles of each family member during the seventies and eighties in Argentina. From the …

Almost The Same, But Not Quite: Re-Orienting The Story Of The Subject In Christina Fernández Cubas's El Año De Gracia , Jessica A. Folkart
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
Cristina Fernández Cubas's novel El año de Gracia (1985), about a young Spaniard who is shipwrecked on a deserted island with only a mangy shepherd for company, evokes the political dialectics of self/other found in the European's discovery and conquest of an unknown island in Robinson Crusoe. In Fernández Cubas's literary depiction of the European subject, however, she situates him on the margins of power in order to view the dynamic from a different perspective. The postcolonial theorizations of Edward Said and Homi Bhabha inform this analysis of how Fernández Cubas's castaway is at first overpowered by the other …

A year before his untimely death in 1980, in the days before the internet, before even the minitel bleu or rose, Roland Barthes compared the personals – at that time still print-based – of two popular French dailies. On the one hand, the advertisements in Le Nouvel Observateur belied artifice, he noted. The information their writers shared publicly with potential mates revealed a certain banal artificiality. Despite the obvious effort the creators of the ads had put into catching the eye of possible matches, in spite of the care with which they had weighed the words before ultimately selecting …

Unearthing The Past: The Archaeology Of Bog Bodies In Glob, Atwood, Hébert And Drabble, Anthony Purdy
Unearthing The Past: The Archaeology Of Bog Bodies In Glob, Atwood, Hébert And Drabble, Anthony Purdy
French Studies Publications
Within the narrative poetics of the archaeological find, accounts of the discovery of beautifully preserved Iron Age bodies in the peat-bogs of Northwestern Europe constitute a particularly complex, well-defined and resonant subgenre. A reading of the genre’s founding text, P.V. Glob’s The Bog People, reveals a repertoire of tropes and topoï that will inform subsequent fictional treatments of bog body finds. Arguing that the poetic specificity of the bog body lies in its extraordinary capacity to abolish temporal distance and mediate between past and present, this essay seeks to define the figure as a special kind of chronotopic motif, or …

Agustín Gómez-Arcos, Sharon G. Feldman
Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications
Agustín Gómez-Arcos, a bilingual dramatist and novelist, was born in 1933 in the village of Enix (Almeria). The origins of his theater can be traced to his childhood experiences, in which he witnessed firsthand the horrors of the Spanish Civil War and the dark clouds of oppression of the Francoist regime, images that left indelible imprints on his literature and his life. Although in the future he would leave behind both native country and language, his memories of the Civil War and postwar period would continue to surface in his plays.
[Introduction To] From Within The Frame: Storytelling In African-American Studies, Bertram D. Ashe
[Introduction To] From Within The Frame: Storytelling In African-American Studies, Bertram D. Ashe
Bookshelf
The book explores the written representation of African-American oral storytelling from Charles Chesnutt, Zora Neale Hurston and Ralph Ellison to James Alan McPherson, Toni Cade Bambara and John Edgar Wideman. At its core, the book compares the relationship of the "frame tale" - an inside-the-text storyteller telling a tale to an inside-the-text listener - with the relationship between the outside-the-text writer and reader. The progression is from Chesnutt's 1899 frame texts, in which the black spoken voice is contained by a white narrator/listener, to Bambara's sixties-era example of a "frameless" spoken voice text, to Wideman's neo-frame text of the late …

Codeswitching between determiner and noun in which the language of …

Harry Potter: An Archetypal Hero's Journey In Four Books, Caitlin Cp Burrows
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
All stories told in myths, be they Greek, Norse or Celt, are retellings of the same small number of stories, just in different languages and different settings. Joseph Campbell, one of the foremost mythology scholars in the 20th century establishes the archetypal ‘monomyth’ of the hero in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces. According to Campbell, the ‘archetypal myths’ are, to name three, the Creation Myth, the Virgin Birth and the Hero’s Journey. The stories I will be focusing on is the archetypal hero’s story, in the version told by J.K. Rowling in her series of books, …

Consider the following scenario: You arrive at graduate school in time for the three-day orientation, which consists of a series of workshop "training" to be a scholar. One half-day session covers the conference proposal and presentation; another trains new students to write seminar papers; a third focuses on the prospectus and dissertation; yet another teaches the composition articles for refereed journals. At the end of three days, you are ostensibly "trained" in the basics required to contribute to your profession as a scholar and researcher. While you might continue to develop these "skills" as you advance through exams, dissertations, and …
