Chinese Cinema And Transnational Cultural Politics : Reflections On Film Festivals, Film Productions, And Film Studies, Yingjin Zhang
Chinese Cinema And Transnational Cultural Politics : Reflections On Film Festivals, Film Productions, And Film Studies, Yingjin Zhang
Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese
This study situates Chinese cinema among three interconnected concerns that all pertain to transnational cultural politics: (1) the impact of international film festivals on the productions of Chinese films and their reception in the West; (2) the inadequacy of the “Fifth Generation” as a critical term for Chinese film studies; and (3) the need to address the current methodological confinement in Western studies of Chinese cinema. By “transnational cultural politics” here I mean the complicated——and at times complicit—ways Chinese films, including those produced in or coproduced with Hong Kong and Taiwan, are enmeshed in “a larger process in which popular- …

Augusto Roa Bastos's Trilogy As Postmodern Practice, Helene C. Weldt-Basson
Augusto Roa Bastos's Trilogy As Postmodern Practice, Helene C. Weldt-Basson
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
Augusto Roa Bastos's most recent novel, El fiscal (1993), completes the author's trilogy on the "monotheism of power," which the novel constitutes in conjunction with the prior works Hijo de hombre (1960) and Yo el Supremo (1974). These novels form a larger whole by virtue of the way in which they attempt to define Paraguay's identity through the nation's history. Hijo de hombre focuses on both the Chaco War and a series of Paraguayan civil wars; Yo el Supremo concentrates on the nineteenth-century dictatorship of Dr. José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia; and El fiscal presents both Alfredo Stroessner's dictatorship (1954-1989) …

Less Or More Black And White? Reassessing Genet's Les Nègres In Light Of Both Published Versions, Brian G. Kennelly
World Languages and Cultures
Each of the five plays by Jean Genet performed before his death in 1986 exists in more than one published version.2 Critics have discussed the differences between the various published versions of each play3 with the exception of Les nègres: the drama commissioned by Raymond Rouleau, first published by Marc Barbezat in 1958, first performed in a production by Roger Blin at the Thèâtre de Lutèce in Paris in 1959, and published in a revised edition the following year.
Why have the changes Genet made to Les nègres remained undiscussed? Perhaps the attention of critics, like that …

Unwelcome Heroines : Mao Dun And Yu Dafu's Creations Of A New Chinese Woman, Li Chun, Sylvia Lin
Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese
In this essay, I examine fictional works by two of the most influential and progressive male writers of the period—Mao Dun and Yu Dafu - to explore issues concerning the emergence of the new Chinese woman. My study will focus on Mao Dun’s story, “Chuangzao” [Creation], published in 1928, and Yu Dafu’s short novel, Ta shi yi ge ruo nuzi [She is a weak woman], written in 1932. I look at these writers’ depictions of two different types of woman and contemporary Chinese men’s reactions to a new gender relation. Male intellectuals, while heralding the advance of a new Chinese …

Wang Chi Wong
Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese

Agency Beyond Subjectivity : The Unredeemed Project Of May Fourth Fiction, Deirdre Sabina Knight
Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese
This paper is part of a larger project in which I make a case for the central importance of the problem of free will to considerations of Chinese modernity. I begin by distinguishing between two key aspects of modernity and the Enlightenment: (1) subjectivity, or the realm of consciousness including the capacity for critical reason, and (2) agency, or acting on the world outside consciousness in a way that makes a difference. I then suggest that neglecting the development of rational agency cripples the force of the commitment to human freedom that drives the project of modernity. In calling attention …
