The Free-Ride Procedure To Morphophonemic Learning Is Correct. Some Evidence From Catalan Vowel Epenthesis, Clàudia Pons-Moll, Maria-Rosa Lloret
The Free-Ride Procedure To Morphophonemic Learning Is Correct. Some Evidence From Catalan Vowel Epenthesis, Clàudia Pons-Moll, Maria-Rosa Lloret
Clàudia Pons-Moll
The structure present in URs is not challenging when productive morphophonemic alternations shed light on it, and when there is a clear and systematic phonological condition in the language that justifies the differences between the UR that has to be established and the corresponding surface representation. The challenge, or the uncertainty, appears in those cases in which such morphophonemic alternations do not exist, when they are not fully productive or transparent, and also when alternative interpretations are possible. This is the case of the URs corresponding to words beginning with < esC >- in Catalan (escriure 'to write', estona 'while', espot 'spot'), …

Multilingualism At The Court Of Justice Of The European Union: Theoretical And Practical Aspects, Rafał Mańko, Olga Łachacz
Multilingualism At The Court Of Justice Of The European Union: Theoretical And Practical Aspects, Rafał Mańko, Olga Łachacz
Dr. Rafał Mańko
The paper analyses and evaluates the linguistic policy of the Court of Justice of the European Union against the background of other multilingual courts and in the light of theories of legal interpretation. Multilingualism has a direct impact upon legal interpretation at the Court, displacing traditional approaches (intentionalism, textualism) with a hermeneutic paradigm. It also creates challenges to the acceptance of the Court’s case-law in the Member States, which seem to have been adequately tackled by the Court’s idiosyncratic translation policy.

Do-It-Yourself Mt: Taking (Statistical) Machine Translation To The Next Level, Uwe Muegge
Uwe Muegge
New web-based statistical machine translation services are currently revolutionizing the market. These SaaS solutions allow users to customize an MT engine with their own translation memories. As most of these services follow the subscription model, launching a DIY MT project costs only a fraction of deploying a traditional machine translation tool, which makes this powerful technology affordable for even the smallest organization.

Retroflex Variation And Methodological Issues: A Reply To Simonsen, Moen, And Cowen (2008), Janne Bondi Johannessen, Bert Vaux
Retroflex Variation And Methodological Issues: A Reply To Simonsen, Moen, And Cowen (2008), Janne Bondi Johannessen, Bert Vaux
Bert Vaux
We argue that the differences in the articulation of Norwegian retroflex consonants described by Simonsen, Moen, and Cowen (2008) as individual variation may instead be due to factors such as individual and dialectal background, rather than variation across a single variety. Our main argument is based on existing dialect literature and speech corpus data, which show that the phonemes involved in the retroflexion process are not present in the same linguistic contexts in all dialects. SMC’s experimental stimuli and conditions include linguistic contexts which do not necessarily induce retroflexion naturally, and therefore cannot be relied upon to provide an accurate …
Rhotic Metathesis In Algherese Catalan: A Harmonic Serialism Account, Francesc Torres-Tamarit, Clàudia Pons-Moll, Maria Cabrera-Callís
Rhotic Metathesis In Algherese Catalan: A Harmonic Serialism Account, Francesc Torres-Tamarit, Clàudia Pons-Moll, Maria Cabrera-Callís
Clàudia Pons-Moll
In the light of the diachronic process of rhotic metathesis that has applied in Algherese Catalan,1 in this paper we provide some empirical evidence for considering the left edge of the stem a prominent position, along the lines of Alber 2001. A Harmonic Serialism analysis of the data is presented, as well as a comparison with parallel OT. It is argued that the typological predictions that derive from Harmonic Serialism are more restrictive than those derived from parallel OT. Only resorting to Harmonic Serialism, indeed, long-distance metathesis can be discarded as a potential process of natural languages (Hume 2001). It …

Loanword Phonology, Lexical Exceptions, Morphologically Driven Underapplication, And The Nature Of Positionally Biased Constraints, Clàudia Pons-Moll
Clàudia Pons-Moll
In this paper we provide a formal account for underapplication of vowel reduction to schwa in Majorcan Catalan loanwords and learned words. On the basis of the comparison of these data with those concerning productive derivation and verbal inflection, which show analogous patterns, in this paper we also explore the existing —and not yet acknowledged— correlation between those processes that exhibit a particular behaviour in the loanword phonology with respect to the native phonology of the language, those processes that show lexical exceptions and those processes that underapply due to morphological reasons. In light of the analysis of the very …
When Diachrony Meets Synchrony. Phonological Change, Phonological Variation And Optimal Paradigms, Clàudia Pons-Moll
When Diachrony Meets Synchrony. Phonological Change, Phonological Variation And Optimal Paradigms, Clàudia Pons-Moll
Clàudia Pons-Moll
General goals. This paper has three goals. First, it aims to illustrate how the problems derived from access to intricate diachronic empirical data can sometimes be informed by a careful look at interdialectal microvariation, in that this linguistic microvariation can sometimes help to explain why a phonological process applies or has applied. Second, it intends to show how some of the machineries developed within Optimality Theory to account for synchronic surface resemblances between the members of an inflectional paradigm can be applied to account for phonological change. Third, it attempts to demonstrate how the analysis of phonological change and linguistic …
