Bjp And Donyi-Polo: New Challenges To Christianity In Arunachal Pradesh And Northeast India, Dyron Daughrity

Located on the disputed border with China, Arunachal Pradesh is the most remote of India’s northeastern states. Christianity is growing there—from 1 percent in 1971 to 30 percent in 2011—but that number may have reached a plateau. Arunachal Pradesh is undergoing rapid sociocultural change. While Hinduism is not well-established in the region, there is tremendous interest in a relatively new religion called Donyi-Polo. Some Hindus argue Donyi-Polo is actually a branch of Hinduism, and they are having some success in making this claim. This article explores the changing religious, political, and cultural dynamics of Arunachal Pradesh.

Missional churches, those that bring Jesus outside the walls of the church and into the unknown, unreached, and uncomfortable areas in the United States and the world, seem to have taken center stage in the realm of popular Christian discussion over the past few decades. However, roughly thirty percent of the globe remains untargeted by “missional churches.” In his book “Planting Missional Churches,” Ed Stetzer highlights the need for missional churches in the U.S. in particular, citing a Gallup poll that observed eighty percent of American churches in decline. In 1924, eminent Church historian and missiologist Stephen Neill began his career as a missionary to south India under the supervision of the celebrated Amy Carmichael. What seemed like a match made in heaven resulted in a bitter parting of ways. How could such a promising mission partnership go so wrong? This paper draws upon primary research in order to examine this intriguing case study of conflict in the mission field.
