Worship Music As Spiritual Identity: An Examination Of Music In The Liturgy Among Black And White Adventists In The United States From 1840 To 1944, David A. Williams
David Williams
The Topic
This study examined Black and White Seventh-day Adventist music in the liturgy in the United States from 1840 to 1944. Little scholarly attention has been given to the development of Adventist liturgical practice, the function of music in the liturgy, and the effect of music upon the spiritual identity. This study utilized liturgical history, ritual studies, musicology, and liturgical theology to derive and compare the spiritual identity fostered through music in the liturgy by these ethnic groups. This study considered both the shared and distinct spiritual identities of Black and White Adventists, as cultivated by the music in …
Some Reflections On The Field Of Sermon Studies, Robert Ellison
Some Reflections On The Field Of Sermon Studies, Robert Ellison
Robert Ellison
Multidisciplinary endeavours with the word ‘studies’ in their names have brought like-minded scholars together for over sixty years. Those specializing in certain parts of the world, for example, can join the North American Conference on British Studies (founded in 1950), the British Association for American Studies (1955), the African Studies Association (1957), or a host of other groups. Similarly, organisations for scholars interested in specific time periods include the Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies (1983), the Society for Renaissance Studies (1967) and the European Network for Avant-Garde and Modernism Studies. Finally, students of politics, gender and other aspects …
Preaching And Sermons, Robert Ellison Ph.D.
Preaching And Sermons, Robert Ellison Ph.D.
Robert Ellison
This essay, published in Volume III of The Oxford History of Protestant Dissenting Traditions, examines the art of preaching during the nineteenth century. Its focus is not the sermons themselves, but rather lectures on preaching delivered to ministerial students in England, the United States, and Canada. Topics addressed in these lectures include not only homiletic theory, but also other aspects of the preacher's work, such as prayer, pastoral visitation, and developing good working relationships with church officers and other members of the congregation.

Anti-Social Media: Communal Transformation And The Barriers Of Technology, A. Thornhill
Anti-Social Media: Communal Transformation And The Barriers Of Technology, A. Thornhill
A. Chadwick Thornhill
In light of the proliferation of social media consumption in the West and across the world, this paper considers the implications for communal participation and transformation, particularly for the Christian community. The paper argues that God intends for our formation as human beings in general, and as Christians in particular, to occur primarily in the context of interdependent relationships with others, and particularly within our faith family.
Protestantism And Fundamentalism, William Vance Trollinger
Protestantism And Fundamentalism, William Vance Trollinger
William Vance Trollinger Jr.
The term "fundamentalism" has been used to describe a host of religious movements across the globe that are militantly antimodernist, aggressively patriarchal, literalist in their reading of sacred texts, and assiduous in their efforts to draw boundaries between themselves and outsiders. While "Islamic fundamentalism" has received the most attention, particularly after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, scholars and journalists have also applied the term to movements within such disparate traditions as Judaism, Sikhism, and Hinduism, as well as to various Christian groups. There are benefits to understanding fundamentalism as a global movement that grows out of deep-seated and intense …
A Rhetorical Comparison Of Spurgeon, Newman, And Macdonald, Robert Ellison
A Rhetorical Comparison Of Spurgeon, Newman, And Macdonald, Robert Ellison
Robert Ellison
This is the first book to employ the methods of orality-literacy scholarship in the study of nineteenth-century preaching. The debate over whether sermons should be read from the manuscript or delivered extempore is analyzed, and the Victorian practices of attending preaching services on Sunday and reading and writing about sermons throughout the week is discussed. The second part of the book analyses the rhetoric of Charles Haddon Spurgeon, John Henry Newman, and George MacDonald, and ends with a comparison of these three preachers' sermons on the death and resurrection of Lazarus.

From Theology To Praxis: The Quest For The Full Inclusion Of Women In Churches Of Christ, Jennifer H. Christy
From Theology To Praxis: The Quest For The Full Inclusion Of Women In Churches Of Christ, Jennifer H. Christy
Jennifer H Christy
From the earliest days of the movement’s history, Churches of Christ have been shaped by a literalist reading of the Bible that has privileged certain texts over others in the conversation surrounding the role of women in the life of the church. Patriarchal systems of thought and practice have dominated the conversation. Support from a few key texts has been used to establish the belief that women are created in subordination and submission to men, often resulting in the status of women being regarded as inferior and unequal to men. This manifests in a polity where women are limited, or …

Bringing Liturgical Dance Into The Twenty-First Century, Trisha Holmes, Lisa Smith
Trisha Holmes
Dance Is a very powerful and ever changing form of communication found in virtually every civilization on earth. Because it is developing, new forms like Liturgical dance can often go unnoticed by the dance community as a whole. Liturgical dance can be traced back to the early slave churches of the 1700’s where it began as free form worship. Slaves and free “Blacks” gathered in large groups to worship, during these gatherings persons felt compelled by the “spirit of God” to move in wild abandon, like the “ring shout”, a tradition brought to America by the slave trade.(Allen ,“Slave Ships …
