To The Glory Of God Evaluating Origen’S Exposition Of The Scripture In His Leviticus Homilies, Andrew Johnson
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Johnson, Andrew M. “To the Glory of God: Evaluating Origen’s Exposition of the Scripture in His Leviticus Homilies”. Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2022. 237 pp.
Origen has been called “Adamantine,” an impossibly hard metal. Many have found his work to be strong and powerful and equal in its density. Origen’s preaching is almost impenetrable to the Evangelical preacher. This dissertation seeks to offer an entry for modern evangelical preachers to engage with the historic practice of figural exposition in Origen’s Leviticus homilies. The dissertation investigates the interpretative, homiletical and rhetorical histories which intersect in Origen’s homilies. It unpacks Origen’s use …

Text Mining Stewardship Sermons, Rosanna Anderson
Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry
Preaching about stewardship is a perennial concern for pastors. The advice that many mainline books on stewardship offer is for pastors to become more comfortable with talking about money. Another recommendation is to follow secular fundraising practices and speak about giving in positive terms like opportunity rather than obligation. But are pastors following this advice? How are pastors actually asking for financial support during their stewardship sermons?
Having read and published reviews of numerous books with theories about what pastors and church leaders could do to increase financial giving, I set out to find empirical information about what preachers …

Drama And Sermon In Late Medieval England: Performance, Authority, Devotion, Charlotte Steenbrugge
Drama And Sermon In Late Medieval England: Performance, Authority, Devotion, Charlotte Steenbrugge
Early Drama, Art, and Music
This is the first full-length study of the interrelation between sermons and vernacular religious drama in late medieval England. It investigates how these genres worked as media for public learning, how they combined this didactic aim with literary exigencies, and how the plays in particular acquired and reflected a position of authority. The interrelation between sermons and vernacular drama, formerly assumed relatively uncritically to be a close one, is addressed from a variety of angles, including historical connections, performative aspects, and the portrayal of the sacrament of penance. The analysis challenges the common assumption that Middle English religious drama is …

Liturgical Developments In Europe, Walter F. Buszin
Liturgical Developments In Europe, Walter F. Buszin
Concordia Theological Monthly
Despite the many serious impediments imposed by destructive warfare and total defeat, the Germans have published perhaps more liturgical literature during the past few postwar years than the people of any other nation. This is significant already because it indicates clearly that they do not regard liturgics as an area which is rather nonessential in character. The ravages and dispossessions of war and defeat drive man to the stark realities and basic needs of life and existence. In days of scarcity and want, man craves not dessert and luxury; on the contrary, he is then perfectly satisfied and altogether happy …

This 44 page ledger contains Dr. John H. A. Bomberger's handwritten notes about the sermons preached during his final four years as pastor of the First Reformed Church of Easton, Pennsylvania. Entries contain the date, time of day, place, Biblical text and theme for each sermon. Often, additional remarks are found about the occasion of the sermon (a Confirmation, Communion, funeral, Harvest sermon or cornerstone laying, for example), the weather, and attendance. Names and ages of the deceased (and sometimes the cause of death) are recorded for the funeral services. The death of a child is frequently noted as the …
