Gender identity, one of the most important social categories in people’s lives, is socially constructed, and language is claimed to have a significant role in constructing the gender identity. This paper studies the construction of Sundanese women through five Sundanese nouns referring to women found in the corpus of Manglè magazine, published between 1958–2013. The research employs a mixed-method design in which quantitative analysis is combined with qualitative analysis to investigate how the nouns referring to women are used to construct Sundanese women from the periods of Guided Democracy (1958–1965) to Reform Era (2004–2013). Archives, Artwork, And A Garden: The John Stokes And Mary’S Gardens Collection At The University Of Dayton, Kayla Harris

The University of Dayton hosted a unique exhibit in the spring of 2017 highlighting the John Stokes and Mary’s Gardens archival collection. In addition to materials from the collection, the exhibit also featured a live garden with flowers named for the Blessed Virgin Mary inside the library, and specially commissioned artwork by artist Holly Schapker. The library was able to reach different audiences and hopes this will serve as an example in thinking of more interactive ways for visitors to experience an archival exhibit.

Digital information resources are a vitally important and increasingly large component of academic libraries’ collection and preservation responsibilities. This includes content converted to and originating from digital form (born-digital). Preserving digital material, such as social media and websites, is essential for ensuring that future generations know everyone’s story, especially those groups which have been historically underrepresented in official records. This panel describes how the University of Dayton planned and carried out an exhibit on the John Stokes and Mary’s Gardens archival collection, featuring a garden inside the library. A “Mary garden” is a garden filled with flowers named for Mary.

The panel describes the content of the collection and how the exhibit was originally conceived; the exhibit design and programming; and the challenges faced during the planning process.

In the summer of 2016, Gettysburg College’s Musselman Library piloted a student-focused, library-led initiative designed to promote creative undergraduate research: the Digital Scholarship Summer Fellowship. The fellowship is a ten-week, paid summer program for rising sophomores and juniors that introduces the student fellows to digital scholarship, exposes them to a range of digital tools, and provides space for them to converse with appropriate partners about research practices and possibilities. In this article, I examine the documentation of culture (DoC). This is the practice of gathering and producing the information and data relevant to intangible cultural phenomena. DoC is generally practiced by teams of documentalists generally outside GLAM institutions (i.e., galleries, libraries, archives and museums). As such, it differs from the preservation and description of concrete objects of cultural heritage done within those institutions. Analysis of documentary boundaries through the study of a set of documents related to the French Theater Company Turak. We describe as artistic documents the different documents that circulate during the creation of a play. There is an initial documentary collection comprised of the documentation for the performance on which the company relies to stage the play itself. At different stages of artistic creation, the company designs documents that are useful for the pursuit of creative reflection. The aim of this paper is to investigate what happens if we leave the criteria of materiality and permanence behind in the study of documents. How far can we stretch the definition of a document or define a documentation process in a situation where neither the originary fact, or object, nor that by which this is represented is material or permanent? Though the system will not permit it, our abstract is an out-of-focus photograph of ducks at 1900 pixels wide and black and white, which is approximately 20% the size of the original color photograph we use for our title. By most technical standards, it is a bad picture. Straightening the horizon, cropping the image to emphasize the two foremost ducks, brightening the image to highlight the feet, and adding a caption that indicates activity might yield a “better” picture for some viewers. The growing number of case studies on the ethical issues faced in cultural heritage digitization calls for a discussion of this generally neglected dimension of digitization. The importance of the ethical dimension is also supported by implicit and explicit assumptions that well-established approaches to ethics in archives, libraries, and museums do not work with digitization. The aim of this paper is to determine what ethical issues arise in cultural heritage digitization and how they affect methods of decision-making and organizing digitization. This research project explores the usability and usefulness of the “Libraries” webpage located within students’ MyBGSU account through usability testing. Usability testing is a method in which participants are asked to complete tasks within a platform (e.g. webpage, mobile app, etc.) that mimic a typical user in order to understanding their behavior, challenges, and thoughts about it. This project examines how White curators at four museums in Wisconsin portray Native American women based on a number of institutional and individual curatorial choices. Intersectional Theory is used to explore how museums and museum professionals navigate questions of representation of a traditionally marginalized group. It places specific emphasis on the relationship between Community Curation and Intersectional Theory and explores whether or not the involvement of Native groups noticeably impacts representation of Native American women.

Photography is an established art form that combines the knowledge of chemistry, light, and optics to render an image. Initially, the image is captured on a flat surface coated with emulsion and combined with an exposure to sunlight or another illuminating source. Today, images are captured by digital methods. Artistically, the photograph may reveal sceneries of landscapes, of treasured belongings and of people, as they are seen to the human eye. Maximizing Institutional Archives With Limited Resources: A Case Study, Beth Arjona

This practice-oriented article shares how one small institution on a tight budget without a fulltime archivist leveraged existing resources (human, technological, and physical) to maximize 75 years of institutional archives for a recent milestone alumni reunion. Projects included drafting an institutional history, interviewing long-time members of the institution, organizing photos for display, and providing alumni with access to yearbooks. Special attention is given to the process of creating a 20-minute institutional history video, which premiered at an alumni banquet and was shared with other constituents electronically.
