How do language and word choice influence the way people think about gender and sexuality? This question is addressed through a syllabus for an entry level college course, which includes suggested readings and activities along with explanations and advice for instructors. This course provides a foundation for understanding the power of language and the impact that the vocabulary used to describe people in relation to their gender and sexuality has. Initially, I planned to make a short film for my senior project, exploring the themes of gender, fan culture and identity. Due to COVID-19, I ended up just writing a screenplay instead. I've decided not to submit the screenplay here, since I want to hold off on presenting it to the world until I've reached the 'final' final version (a completed film), and so instead, this is just an informal reflection on some of the motivations that went into writing the screenplay.

This public dataset contains transcripts of 8 in-depth semistructured interviews with drag artists. Destiny Baxter conducted these interviews during Spring 2020. This follows up on an available dataset of 22 interviews of drag artists conducted in Spring 2019 by SIUE students, available at https://spark.siue.edu/siue_fac/104/

All 2019 and 2020 interviews used the same instrument.

Intersectional feminism informed how literary scholar bell hooks understands and interacts with the world. As a result, feminism is deeply intertwined in all of her commentaries and sociocultural analyses. In her 2003 book We Real Cool: Black Men and Masculinity, hooks writes about how male masculinity and blackness interact with each other in this society. Her proclivity towards feminism isn’t restrained. A majority of the book is dedicated to understanding how toxic patriarchy has victimized and empowered black men, specifically seeking to examine their relationship with black women.
