On October 8-11th, 2009, an historic event occurred in Austin, Texas. The Fire & Ink III: Cotillion brought together LGBT writers and artists of African descent from around the nation and beyond. This dissertation analyzes five salient moments in the history of the standardization of the Spanish language that took place in the central decades of the nineteenth century: first, the reformed spelling system proposed in London by Andrés Bello and Juan García del Río in 1823 in order to promote Latin American literacy; second, the simultaneous officialization in 1844 of two different orthographic norms in Chile and Spain, both of them surrounded by intense ideological debates, the former led by Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, the latter by a teachers' association established in Madrid; third, the publication in 1847 of Bello's grammar, which …

Linguistic ideologies are defined and placed in the context of glottopolitical studies (or political approaches to language). Ideological representations of Spanish in the context of MERCOSUR and the panhispanic community are discussed.

En este trabajo se revisa el proceso de institucionalización de la filología en la Argentina a partir del estudio de un conjunto de documentos desconocidos hasta el presente: las cartas que Américo Castro, primer director del Instituto de Filología de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, que dirigió a Ramón Menéndez Pidal y Tomás Navarro Tomás, responsables del Centro de Estudios Históricos de Madrid. El análisis de estos materiales permite demostrar que la fundación del Instituto supuso la articulación de posiciones encontradas respecto de la definición de su agenda institucional.
