Both historical and personal essay, this culminating project is a creative non-fiction work exploring the modern historical roots of the Israel/Palestine conflict. Part I surveys the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Palestine, centering on two key figures: Israeli Prime Minister, David Ben Gurion (1886-1973), and Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Muslim Leader Hajj Amin al-Husayni (1897-1974). Interweaving historical fact, myth, personal story, and biography, with Israeli and Palestinian poetry and poses by the author, themes such as relationship to land, attachment to home, and the displacement created by industrialization upon a traditional, rural lifestyle are explored. The West African city of Timbuktu flourished as a center for Islamic scholarship from the 14th through the 16th century. The social structure of the city was based on wealth, with further stratification by degree of literacy, and expertise in interpreting Islamic legal texts. As a consequence, books and libraries evolved into blessed symbols of scholarship, wealth, and power. This study explores the history of books and libraries during the Golden Age of Timbuktu (1493--1591), followed by a discussion of the divergence of library practices in Timbuktu from those in the greater Islamic world of the time.

The Abnā' Al-Dawla: The Definition And Legitimation Of Identity In Response To The Fourth Fitna, John P. Turner

This article will reopen the question about the identity and provenance of the abnā' al-dawla. Who were they? When did they form as a collective and why? The standard view is that the abnā' al-dawla were the backbone of the Abbasid dynasty, coming into existence with that regime after the revolution circa 132/750 and consisting of the original fighters from Khurasan and their descendants, who formed an elite social and political structure of supporters. This privileged status accorded them the moniker abnā' al-dawla (sons/supporters of the dynasty).

Two recent exhibitions, Carpets of Andalusia and Mamluk Rugs from Egypt, at The Textile Museum afforded a rare opportunity to compare two radically different rug-weaving traditions from the perspectives of design and weave structure. While not often evident to the casual viewer, there is a significant relationship between design, pattern, and weave structure in all Oriental carpets. The opportunity to explore such differences warrants careful examination and critical viewing.The Mamluk rugs all probably date from the last quarter of the 15th century. They comprise a cohesive group defined by color, a geometric style, and similarity of weave characteristics.

In this paper I will display, examine, and deconstruct the "classical" medieval Islamic conception of the Mediterranean as seen through colorful, miniature maps found in medieval Arabic and Persian geographical manuscripts from the 11th to 17th centuries. In his classic book "Mohammad and Charlemagne" (1939), the Belgian scholar Henri Pirenne set forth what has since come to be known as the Pirenne thesis, expressing the dominant European view that the sudden advent of Islam on the "other" side of the Mediterranean disrupted the unity of the "Roman Lake" forever. Sanayi mekteblerinin ilk nüveleri ve nizamnameleri Tanzimat döneminde ortaya çıkmış, II. Abdulhamit döneminde eğitim sisteminde I. Meşrutiyet’ten sonra ıslâhhaneler, 1885’te sanayi mektebi adını almış; ancak, 1894’e kadar bir boşluk yaşanmış ve öğrenci sayılarında ciddi sayılabilecek azalma olmuştur. 1894’ten sonra hem okul sayıları artmış hem de okullar müstakil binalarına kavuşturulmuştur. Islâhhaneler, gerçek sanayi mektebi hüviyetine kavuşturulmuş ve sanayi mekteblerinin sayıları artmıştır. 1913’te İdare-i Umumiye Vilayet Kanununun yayınlanması ile sanayi mekteblerinin masrafları vilayetler hususi idareleri bütçelerinden karşılanmaya başlayınca okullar önceki döneme nazaran daha istikrarlı bir konuma geldi, fakat bu kez de her vilayetin ayrı program tatbik etmesinden dolayı okullar arasında bir birlik …

Bu çalışmada Osmanlı Devleti’nin Birinci Dünya Savaşı’na girişinden sonra Çarlık Rusya’sının talebi üzerine İngiltere ve Fransa’nın Çanakkale Boğazı’na karşı 18 Mart 1915’de donanma ile düzenledikleri saldırı ele alınmakta ve savaşın sebepleri, gelişimi, beklentileri ve sonuçları 1915 yılının Kasım ayından itibaren içinde bulunulan psikolojik durum da göz önüne alınarak değerlendirilmektedir. Çalışma giriş bölümünü takip eden “Neden Çanakkale?, Çanakkale Savaşı Sırasında İstanbul’da Durum Ne İdi?, Çanakkale Tahkimatı, 18 Mart Öncesi Çanakkale’ye Yapılan Öncü Taarruzlar, 18 Mart Çanakkale Deniz Savaşı ve Sonuç” bölümlerinden oluşmaktadır.
