Globalization And Genocidalism: Fictional Discourse Without Borders (For Fun And Profit), Aleksandar Jokić, Tiphaine Dickson Oct 2006

Globalization And Genocidalism: Fictional Discourse Without Borders (For Fun And Profit), Aleksandar Jokić, Tiphaine Dickson

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this essay we explore the relationship between globalization and genocidalism. “Globalization” is understood as “freedom and ability of individuals and firms to initiate voluntary economic transactions with residents of other countries,” while “genocidalism” is defined as “(i) the purposeful neglect to attribute responsibility for genocide in cases when overwhelming evidence exists, and as (ii) the energetic attributions of “genocide” in less then clear cases without considering available and convincing opposing evidence and argumentation.”

The hypothesis that we defend here as explanatory of globalization’s “surprising” failure to live up to its often repeated theoretical promise that it is not a …

Lion In Winter – Tomás Moro Na Nossa Estação. Diálogos Com O Direito Constitucional, O Cristianismo E A Utopia Social, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha May 2006

Lion In Winter – Tomás Moro Na Nossa Estação. Diálogos Com O Direito Constitucional, O Cristianismo E A Utopia Social, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Is Resisting Genocide A Human Right?, David B. Kopel, Paul Gallant, Joanne D. Eisen May 2006

Is Resisting Genocide A Human Right?, David B. Kopel, Paul Gallant, Joanne D. Eisen

David B Kopel

The genocide in Darfur, Sudan, is perhaps the worst human rights crisis of the new century. This article examines the failures of the international response so far, and offers a solution based on international human rights law.

Conducting an in-depth study of the Darfur genocide, and also discussing other genocides, the Article details the inadequacy of many of the international community's response to genocides, including “targeted sanctions” or international peacekeeping forces.

The Article then examines international legal authorities such as the Genocide Convention, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the International Court of Justice, and demonstrates that groups which …

The Reinvention Of Nato, Robert M. Antis Apr 2006

The Reinvention Of Nato, Robert M. Antis

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

In 2006, NATO is operating well out of area and conducting missions beyond the collective defense limits of its founding Treaty. NATO increasingly supports humanitarian relief operations, while also engaged in Afghanistan, the Mediterranean, and African crisis spots.

These changes provide the reason to examine the thesis: only if NATO is able to effectively transform will it be able to continue in its role as the primary European security institution. This transformation of the Alliance is a process, and one that could yet come to an untimely conclusion following any crisis. How NATO has adapted so far, and the potential …

The Impact Of Regional Economic Integration Under The Gatt/Wto Regime Toward The Peace Process: The Case Of Conflict Resolution Between Taiwan And Mainland China, Chen-Yu Wang Jan 2006

The Impact Of Regional Economic Integration Under The Gatt/Wto Regime Toward The Peace Process: The Case Of Conflict Resolution Between Taiwan And Mainland China, Chen-Yu Wang

SJD Dissertation Abstracts

The main idea of this dissertation is to analyze the possible range of expected a bilateral trade agreement toward economic integration between Taiwan and Mainland China as the first step of peace process. By doing this, this dissertation is devoted to the examination of the "regional economic integration under the GATT/WTO regime" and its impacts on the "peace process," especially in the circumstance of Taiwan Strait.

Although the mutual economic and trade transactions are closer than ever before, the political conflicts between Taiwan and Mainland China are too serious to nearly reach war. Taking into consideration the successful accession into …

International Monetary Fund, Kris Kirby Jan 2006

International Monetary Fund, Kris Kirby

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Just as the United Nations (U.N.) was created in direct response to the human atrocities and international conflict of World War II, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was created to help repair the decimation that was experienced by the developed nations that became involved in the war. While both organizations have seemingly similar objectives (i. e. , post-war reconstruction and creation of an environment for lasting peace), the Articles of Agreement of the IMF, however, contains no explicit mention of human rights.

Rättens Ordning I Den Tid Som Återstår, Matilda Arvidsson Dec 2005

Rättens Ordning I Den Tid Som Återstår, Matilda Arvidsson

Dr Matilda Arvidsson

The article investigates the fundamental concept of 'time' within the framework of the laws of war, using the War on Terrorism as a starting point and the 2003 invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq as an example. The article argues for an eschatological understanding of time during the War on Terrorism, framing a state of exception, and ultimately keeping law on hold in an enduring 'now' while messianic hopes for redemption are directed towards a new future to come after war.

Politeia And Paideia. “Reminiscences” Of Western Political Thought In A Reading Of Plato’S Politeia, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Dec 2005

Politeia And Paideia. “Reminiscences” Of Western Political Thought In A Reading Of Plato’S Politeia, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Paulo Ferreira da Cunha

Many readings have been proposed of the Politeia. We propose here a brief reflection of the intertextual type, not upon the theme or main themes of this work, but more precisely in search of aspects that also seem to have acquired a posterity (or at any rate a universality that allows for the detection of coincidences). It is not merely that Plato’s great utopian ideas have found an echo in later authors, as one the most important of western politico-philosophical canons. It is also that some topics and arguments that appear through this richly magnificent dialogue seem to have had …
