The Church Reform Of Henry Viii A Product Of The Rennissance, Theo. Hoyer Dec 1934

The Church Reform Of Henry Viii A Product Of The Rennissance, Theo. Hoyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Two more points I should like to stress to show how the soil was long prepared for just such a revolt against Rome as the English Reformation brought. As before stated, abuses like the immorality of the clergy and the scandalous indulgence traffic were never so prominent in England as on the Continent. Some one may think of the monasteries; but I shall speak of them later. But there were things that may also be called abuses in the regimen of the Church, which may seem little when we compare them with others, which, however, like a steadily growing toothache, …

Melanchthon And Luther's Translation Of The New Testament, H. O. Keinath Nov 1934

Melanchthon And Luther's Translation Of The New Testament, H. O. Keinath

Concordia Theological Monthly

When Philip Schwartzerd changed his German name to Melanchthon, this act might have been considered symbolic of the linguistic interest which was to be dominant throughout his life: Greek. As a student of Greek he proved to be the ready helper who enlisted much technical knowledge of the language in the service of Luther's translation of the New Testament. True it is, Luther was the translator, but he was a translator who did not hesitate to draw upon reliable information wherever he found it in order to produce an adequate version. Melanchthon therefore became one of the great colaborers of …

Christian scholars cannot dispense with the study of "classical" antiquity. I know few academic habits as wrong as that of calling every Greek and Roman writer a "classic."

This paper is very frankly on attempt-an attempt to show, by an example taken from history, what kind of reformation the forces of the Renaissance were capable of producing and thus to illustrate, and help to establish, the truth of our assertion, so frequently made and rightly insisted on, that a real and actual reformation of the Church could not be produced by the Renaissance.

The Primitive Christians, E. G. Sihler

They were first called Nazarenes or Galileans. The name Christians, or Messiah believers, was first applied to them at Antioch (Acts 11, 19), and, it seems, in scorn. The Messiah in whom the Jews hoped was something entirely different. Their conception of Him was connected with the Temple tax, which was annually sent to Jerusalem from all the provinces of the Roman Empire.

The Question Of Aramaic Originals, P. E. Kretzmann Jul 1934

The Question Of Aramaic Originals, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

In this particular investigation we are concerned with the gospels, specifically with those of Luke, John, and Matthew, the arrangement being given in the order of their relative importance in the discussion. Mark's gospel will have to be included, at least in an incidental fashion, chiefly on account of the most recent developments, which caused the inclusion of this book in the number of those for which an Aramaic original is alleged.

The Story Of The German Bible, P. E. Kretzmann Jun 1934

The Story Of The German Bible, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

In his thirteenth sermon on the life of Luther, Mathesius remarks: ''In my youth I saw on un-German German Bible, undoubtedly translated from the Latin, which was very dark indeed; for at that time the learned men did not have much regard for the Bible. My father also had a German postil, in which, besides the Gospels of the Sundays, several passages from the Old Testament were explained in postil form, from which I often read to him with great delight." At the same time the father of this pupil of Luther often expressed the wish that he might sec …

For the student of the Bible and its various translations and versions it is most stimulating to be told by scholars who know the field that, in addition to more than a score of Psalters which have till now been found complete or in parts, and at least a dozen renderings of other parts of Holy Scripture, as we have seen, there is an immense field of study in the history of the German Bible whom possibilities arc not yet exhausted.

The Great Awakening In The United States, Richard C. Stuckmeyer May 1934

The Great Awakening In The United States, Richard C. Stuckmeyer

Bachelor of Divinity

In America today, customary usage interprets the term revival as generally applying to special religious services, protracted for a term of days or weeks, in which unusual efforts are put forth to reach the unconverted for the purpose of bringing them to repentance and winning them to lives of Christian faith and service. It is in this regard also that the Great Awakening has been termed a revival, for it extended over a period of years wherein special emphasis was put on emotional preaching for the purpose of arousing people to a rebirth of religious life. This fact will be …

The Story Of The German Bible, P. E. Kretzmann Apr 1934

The Story Of The German Bible, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

Among the many remarkable books which were produced during the golden age of Latin literature there is none which in point of interest and appeal exceeds the little book of forty-six short chapters written by Tacitus and entitled De Germania (an account of the country of Germany). In this book he gives the general boundaries of the country inhabited by the Germanic tribes; he describes the political and mental characteristics of these strange Northern people, the sources of their wealth, their military equipment and prowess, the influence and sacred character of their women, their gods and their modes of worship, …

Hebrew Prophecy A Unique Divine Bestowal;, W. A. Maier

Concordia Theological Monthly

In his recent book The Hebrew Literary Genius (Princeton University Press, 1933) Duncan Black MacDonald, professor emeritus of the Hartford Theological Seminary, presents a modernized revision of the widely heralded theory which finds in the early Arabic the prototype of Hebrew literature and Old Testament institutions. Dr. MacDonald, a leading Arabist of this generation and an honorary member of the Arab Academy of Damascus, has brought Wellhusen up to date, removed scientific archaisms from Robertson Smith, and in the light of more recent investigations has revised the details of Goldziher and of other professional Islamic studies.

The sainted Dr. Joseph Schmidt, a former president of our Fort Wayne Concordia and successor of Ottomar Fuerbringer as president of the Michigan District, in his sermon at the latter’s burial accorded him this significant tribute: "God, the Lord, calls His servants and places them all on the same footing in this respect, that they are His ministers, servants of the Most High.
