The Loehe Colonies In Michigan, Ronald Goodsman Mar 1971

The Loehe Colonies In Michigan, Ronald Goodsman

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this paper is to describe the beginnings of the colonies which Loehe and Craemer founded in the Saginaw Valley in Michigan. The paper does not propose to give an exhaustive account of the history involved, as that is beyond its scope and beyond the limitations of the author. Rather, the purpose of the paper is to give a general overview of some of the reasons behind the founding of the Saginaw Valley colonies and a very brief sketch of their earliest beginnings.

The History Of Radio Station Kfuo 1954 To 1969, Roger R. Kahle Jun 1969

The History Of Radio Station Kfuo 1954 To 1969, Roger R. Kahle

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this research paper is two-fold. First, I hope to bring together significant source material for future historical analyses of Radio Station KFUO during the years 1954-1969. Hence, this paper is accompanied by a bulky Appendix, that reproduces the significant historical documents, and by a detailed Bibliobraphy, noting the location of additional materials. Second, this time period was selected both because scanty historical study has been focussed on it heretofore, and because 1954-1969 is the tenure of KFUO's second General Manager. The events that occurred during this time period have significantly altered the historical motion of KFUO and …

The History And Function Of Trailer Missions In The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, Roy A. Maack Jun 1961

The History And Function Of Trailer Missions In The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, Roy A. Maack

Bachelor of Divinity

A hundred years ago our pioneer missionaries in Michigan used the speediest means at their disposal to spread the Gospel--the pony and the buckboard. Later our missionaries were among the first passengers pulled by the “iron horse” as it gradually blazed a trail westward over the Rockies and to the West Coast. During and for a few years after World War II, our Church preached that same Gospel in the same way, using the modem means of a trailer. The special purpose of open air evangelism by means of trailer missions was to bring the story of the love of …

The Reformation Movement In Estonia, Heino Olavi Kadai Jun 1960

The Reformation Movement In Estonia, Heino Olavi Kadai

Bachelor of Divinity

It is hoped that the thesis at hand is not welcomed only because it adds to the completeness of Reformation research in the English language. The study of the Reformation movement in Estonia will help to demonstrate the fact that the Great Reformation, as Lutherans like to think of the Lutheran Reformation, spread in many different ways and moved by diverse roads, not always following the same pattern in every territory. As the study will bear out, the Reformation movement in Estonia carried many characteristics of its own that differ greatly from the development of the Reformation in Germany, Sweden, …

The Conflict Between Walther And Lohe In The Area Of Ecclesiology, William J. Schmedler Jun 1959

The Conflict Between Walther And Lohe In The Area Of Ecclesiology, William J. Schmedler

Bachelor of Divinity

This thesis is limited to the controversy that existed between Walther and Loehe and thus excludes, except where necessary, any discussion of the controversies which either of these men had with other theologians.

In the same manner a complete discussion of the ecclesiology of either of the participants could not be given. Such a task, for either Walther or Loehe, would constitute a complete study in its own right. This study merely attempts to summarize the ecclesiological thinking of both men to give the reader the necessary information for an understanding of the controversy.

An Historical Study Of The Lutheran Sources Of The Book Of Common Prayer Of 1549, Arthur A. Preisinger Jun 1958

An Historical Study Of The Lutheran Sources Of The Book Of Common Prayer Of 1549, Arthur A. Preisinger

Bachelor of Divinity

The question is, of course, how much influence did the German Reformers exercise over the English? Were their principles of liturgical reform the same? It will be the purpose of this research to try to discover just how much the Reformers in England depended on the influence of Lutheran reform; how much they actually took over into the Book of Common Prayer from the German service books. It cannot be denied that the Lutheran Reformation exerted a tremendous influence in England. Was this merely apolitical influence? Or did Lutheran theology penetrate deeply into the English system at that time?

History Of The India Mission Of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod 1945-1957, James Arthur Fergin Jun 1958

History Of The India Mission Of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod 1945-1957, James Arthur Fergin

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of the research presented in the following pages is to enable the writer to serve in a better capacity as a missionary in a foreign country. The collecting and correlating of the various factors in the development and history of the India Mission during the past thirteen years has been a wonderful opportunity for greater preparation in entering foreign mission work. Another purpose for this research is to bring the history of our Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod’s India Mission to a close. Missionary Elmer E. Griesse presented a thesis to Washington University, St. Louis, on the history of the …

The purpose of this study is to give as comprehensive a picture as possible of the varieties of opinion concerning the state of the believer after death current in the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod.

Current Lutheran Thought In America On Church-State Relations, Robert C. Seltz Jun 1957

Current Lutheran Thought In America On Church-State Relations, Robert C. Seltz

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is to give a summary report of some of the thinking that Lutheran theologians in America have been doing on church-state relations since Conrad Sergendoff made that statement. Representative writers from the various Lutheran bodies have been consulted, although the scope of this report is necessarily not exhaustive.

Jakob Matthias Buehler: Conservative Missionary And Theologian, Eldon R. Stohs Jun 1956

Jakob Matthias Buehler: Conservative Missionary And Theologian, Eldon R. Stohs

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of the paper is not so much to sketch a history, as to see whether the difficulties Rev. Buehler encountered were a result of his liberalism or conservatism.

A History Of The Lutheran Church In New Zealand From 1843-1950, Clemens I. Koch Jun 1955

A History Of The Lutheran Church In New Zealand From 1843-1950, Clemens I. Koch

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the aim of this thesis to present simply the facts connected with the historica1 development of the work of the Lutheran Church in New Zealand. This presentation will enable the matter of methods to be more fully considered and with a greater degree of accuracy. In the present work we shall endeavor to give merely historical facts without entering into subjective judgments as to the methods and procedure adopted.

Johann Friedrich Buenger, The Founder Of Lutheran Charities, Kenneth R. Molnar

Bachelor of Divinity

The influences in the life of Buenger that stimulated his activities in the eleemosynary field will be treated in this study. For this purpose pertinent material is drawn from C F. W. Walther’s Ehrwuerdigen Pastor Johann Friedrich Buenger, bringing to light particularly the early influences in his life.

The Spanish Erasmian Movement Of The Sixteenth Century, Hector Lazos Jun 1955

The Spanish Erasmian Movement Of The Sixteenth Century, Hector Lazos

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is to familiarize the readers, at least in part, with the Spanish Erasmian movement of the sixteenth century. Lutheran historical research has given much attention and study to the historical events of the sixteenth century. But when Lutheran historians study one of the movements of that century, they are prone to connect it with the German Lutheran Reformation. This might be because, as Lutherans, they are especially interested in seeing the influence that Luther and Lutheranism might have had on the religious conscience of other nations. For this reason the figure of Erasmus has been …

The Rise Of Fraternal Organizations In The United States In The Second Half Of The Nineteenth Century, Frederick William Dodge Jun 1955

The Rise Of Fraternal Organizations In The United States In The Second Half Of The Nineteenth Century, Frederick William Dodge

Bachelor of Divinity

Many Lutherans have written on the subject of fraternal organizations. Their interest has usually been the doctrine of the lodge as opposed to the doctrine of the Church. It is hoped that this study may be a start toward our task of “rounding out" our understanding of fraternal organizations. I trust that the Commission on Fraternal Organizations of the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod will find it possible to continue studies in this direction.

The Life And Labors Of Eduard Raimund Baierlein, Walter P. Schoenfuhs Jun 1954

The Life And Labors Of Eduard Raimund Baierlein, Walter P. Schoenfuhs

Bachelor of Divinity

One cannot properly appreciate Baierlein's contributions unless one understands what has been accomplished before the missionary’s arrival. Thus, besides sketching his biography, the thesis will also discuss the early Christian missions among the Chippewa Indians in Michigan and the missionary activities in India before Baierlein's arrival. Particular emphasis will be devoted to Lutheran mission work in these countries.

A History Of Missouri Synod Work Among The Japanese, Arthur H. Strege Jun 1952

A History Of Missouri Synod Work Among The Japanese, Arthur H. Strege

Bachelor of Divinity

This thesis gives a brief history of work done by members of the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod among people of Japanese ancestry living in various places throughout the world. A complete title of the material covered in this thesis should probably read: "A History of Work Done by Pastors, Missionaries, Chaplains, Teachers, and Laymen of the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod among People of Japanese Ancestry in the United States till 1952, and among Japanese People in China till 1950 and in Japan till September, 1948." The Reformation Of Cranmer With Special Reference To Its Doctrine And The Influence Upon It, George S. Robbert May 1948

The Reformation Of Cranmer With Special Reference To Its Doctrine And The Influence Upon It, George S. Robbert

Bachelor of Divinity

At the time of Cranmer's youth end early schooling England was Catholic. At the time of his death, it was Protestant. How did this change take place and what were the motivating forces in this change? The opportunity for the break from Rome was given when Henry VIII sought a divorce from Catherine of Aragon in order to marry Anne Bolyen. Cranmer's part in the proceedings of the divorce brought him into the public eye and to a large extent made possible the Reformation of Cranmer. After the break with Rome Cranmer, who was easily influenced by his companions, maintained …

History Of Protestant Missions In Nigeria, Arthur W. Machinske May 1948

History Of Protestant Missions In Nigeria, Arthur W. Machinske

Bachelor of Divinity

When studying the history of missions in a certain country, it is necessary that a study be made of that country. Without any knowledge of the land, its peoples, and its history the story of missions is not made complete, for these three things are so closely interwoven with missions that they cannot be separated.

The Attitude Toward The Confessions Among The Lutherans In The United States From 1800 To 1867, Paul Frederick Maassel May 1947

The Attitude Toward The Confessions Among The Lutherans In The United States From 1800 To 1867, Paul Frederick Maassel

Bachelor of Divinity

In the past few years, there have been many discussions concerning Lutheran union. Very often the backgrounds play an important part in understanding some of the problems in connection with Lutheran union. In this paper no attempt is made to connect the past with the present, as space is limited. An attempt is made to show some of the causes for the attitude toward the Confessions of the Lutheran Church which prevailed between 1800 and 1867.

The Critical Evaluation Of The Influence Of William Sihler In The Development Of The Missouri Synod, Lewis William Spitz May 1947

The Critical Evaluation Of The Influence Of William Sihler In The Development Of The Missouri Synod, Lewis William Spitz

Bachelor of Divinity

A critical evaluation of the influence of a man Like Dr. Sihler upon an active church body presents special d1fficulties. Of the three is essential processes in the art of producing history: the gathering of data, the criticism of data, and the presentation of facts in a readable form, the second in the present instance is particularly difficult for one standing within a certain tradition.

Albrecht Durer And The Lutheran Reformation, William Scar Jun 1945

Albrecht Durer And The Lutheran Reformation, William Scar

Bachelor of Divinity

This dissertation is a study of Albrecht Dürer's life and work with a theologioa1 interest. This is in no way a complete discussion of the artist's life and works. The selection of works treated in chapter four is not a good cross section of his drawings, woodcuts. copper engravings, etchings, and paintings. They are a careful selection of his works of art showing how he gradually employed true Christian or Biblical teaching in his religious subjects. The author endeavors to show in this paper that Albrecht Dürer made a contribution to the work of Martin Luther and his associates as …

Daughters Of Serbin, 1870-1905 History Of The Lutheran Churches At Fedor And Warda, Texas, Arthur C. Repp Jun 1945

Daughters Of Serbin, 1870-1905 History Of The Lutheran Churches At Fedor And Warda, Texas, Arthur C. Repp

Bachelor of Divinity

The history of St. Paul's congregation, as it was later called, with its doctrinal, racial, and language disputes, has already been told. But the story of its first daughters, the congregations which were organized at Fedor and Warde, Texas, is equally important for it shows how the parent and branch congregations influenced one another and how they in turn become one of the strong nuclei around which the present Texas District of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States was formed.

Lutheranism In The Region Of New York Until The Time Of Falckner, Eugene F. Helms Jun 1945

Lutheranism In The Region Of New York Until The Time Of Falckner, Eugene F. Helms

Bachelor of Divinity

The history of the Lutheran Church in the region of New York has its beginning contemporaneously with the beginning of the state of New York. Already at the time of the earliest explorations of that territory and the settlement of the first Dutch colony, we find traces of Lutheranism. True, the Lutherans never were a very large force; and, as a body, they had 1ittle to do with the shaping of New York’s development; nevertheless, Lutheranism was present. There was, also a nernber of individuals of, whose secular work the Lutheran Church can well be proud.

In our discussion we …

A History Of The Cithara Sanctorum (Tranoscius), Jaroslav Vajda May 1944

A History Of The Cithara Sanctorum (Tranoscius), Jaroslav Vajda

Bachelor of Divinity

It is evident from the bibliography of this thesis that there are no English references available on the subject of the Cithara Sanctorum. This is in itself an indication of the ignorance on the part of the English-speaking world concerning this phase of Christian hymnody. Even Julian's exhaustive Dictionary fails to mention the Cithara! It was necessary, therefore, to work entirely with Slovak and Bohemian sources generally. These are naturally secondary sources, with the exception of the two editions of the Cithara which contain most of the original edition's hymns in more or less altered form. A first-hand study will …

The First Years Of Trinity Congregation Freistadt, Wisconsin, Roy A. Suelflow Apr 1944

The First Years Of Trinity Congregation Freistadt, Wisconsin, Roy A. Suelflow

Bachelor of Divinity

During the 17nth and 18nth centuries in Germany Pietism and Rationalism had been opposing the principles founded in the Reformation, which demanded a separation from error. Thus for a long time the Lutherans had kept themselves separate from the errors of the Reformed. Yet thru Pietism, which stressed the outward life instead of doctrine, and thru Rationalism, which set human reason above the revelation of God, this principle of Lutheranism was being undermined, and the punch was being taken out of Lutheran orthodoxy.

The Reaction Of The Roman Catholic Church To The Renaissance And Its Influence On The Lutheran Reformation, John Nieman Apr 1943

The Salzburgers And Their Descendants, Norman Kretzmann Apr 1943

The Salzburgers And Their Descendants, Norman Kretzmann

Bachelor of Divinity

To the ministry of the Lutheran Church in America, this thesis is respectfully inscribed; with the fervent prayer, that by carefully studying the history of the Salzburgers, and especially the unfeigned devotion and ardent seal of the first preachers of the Lutheran Church in America, they and their successors may be stimulated to aim at a more elevated standard of piety, and consecrate themselves anew to His service, who hath redeemed us with His blood, and honored us by appointing us His ambassadors, to reconcile the world unto Himself.
