The question is, of course, how much influence did the German Reformers exercise over the English? Were their principles of liturgical reform the same? It will be the purpose of this research to try to discover just how much the Reformers in England depended on the influence of Lutheran reform; how much they actually took over into the Book of Common Prayer from the German service books. It cannot be denied that the Lutheran Reformation exerted a tremendous influence in England. Was this merely apolitical influence? Or did Lutheran theology penetrate deeply into the English system at that time?

The purpose of this investigation was to discover, if possible, the actual policies and practices of William Laud while he was the Archbishop of Canterbury. It is unfair to have only accusations leveled against; Laud. It is, likewise, just as unfair to have only a glowing account of Laud 's life. Much has been written of the history of English Puritanism. This brief examination of the subject purposes no new contribution. It seeks merely to draw together the main events of that phase of English history and to discuss some of the issues involved.
The first problem is one of definition. One scholar has suggested that Puritanism has as many definitions as it has students, with a like distribution of trustworthiness. Therefore, before attempting to define it ourselves we do well to consider the definitions offered by recognized scholars of the movement.

The Church in England used slightly different forms of the Latin Mass before the Protestant Reformation. Atter the mission of Augustine the few remnants of the old Celtic rite had all but vanished, and the Roman Canon of the Mass, which he brought with him from Pope Gregory I, was in general use, substantially as we know it today. However, in the Middle Ages the Roman Mass, apart from its unchangeable Canon, varied somewhat, in its prayers as well as in its ceremonial rubrics, from diocese to diocese.
