The purpose of the writer's original investigation was to find out what influences and connections existed between the two Reformations. The purpose of this study is to show that before Henry VIII English efforts at union were almost wholly political. At least there is no mention of religious-political parties. War and conciliation were the diplomatic weapons. After Henry's break with the Pope by the Act of Supremacy in 1534 and to 1707 when the final union of the crowns took place political and religious relations became closely entwined. In the past few years, there have been many discussions concerning Lutheran union. Very often the backgrounds play an important part in understanding some of the problems in connection with Lutheran union. In this paper no attempt is made to connect the past with the present, as space is limited. An attempt is made to show some of the causes for the attitude toward the Confessions of the Lutheran Church which prevailed between 1800 and 1867.

In consequence of the shameful debasement of the papacy and the deep corruption of the clergy and monks, the influence of the Church upon the moral and religious culture of the people, in spite of the ardent zeal of the homilists and catechists, was upon the whole much less than formerly. Reverence for the Church as it stood was indeed tottering, but was not yet completely overthrown.

We are concerned here with the influence that the political and economic conditions in England had on the English Reformation. Although, the actions in the break with the Roman Church covered a period of only a few years, the causes for those actions lie in the previous growth of England, politically and economically, An action, as far reaching, as the repudiation of the papacy, certainly did not come about over night. Its causes lie much deeper than merely a breach of canon law.
