Lutherans and other Protestants live with Martin Luther as a part of their heritage. Images of him are unavoidable. The image of Luther as catechist offers example and spur. His tireless efforts to teach the Christian faith to all people, not just the academic and learned, should guide us today. The message embodied in his catechisms offers to us purpose, reconciliation, consolation, and hope.

In the sixteenth century, Catholics and Lutherans frequently not only misunderstood but also exaggerated and caricatured their opponents in order to make them look ridiculous. Now, the Lutheran World Federation and the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity have produced a liturgy for a joint commemoration of the five hundredth anniversary of the Reformation.

What Kind Of Confession Is The Augsburg Confession?: "I Shall Speak Of Your Decrees Before Kings, And Shall Not Be Put To Shame" (Psalm 119:46), Steven D. Paulson

What is the genre of the Augsburg Confession? Knowing this identifies the meaning and use of the document historically and presently. The confession is apocalyptic, despite the disparaging place this genre has held in recent theology. The case comes especially from Martin Luther’s own correspondence of the time and his later recollection of the events given in his 1542 Genesis lectures. In the Genesis lectures Luther connected Augsburg to the conflict Rebecca had come to in the case of primogeniture and Jacob. Martin Luther—reformer, theologian, exegete, pastor, teacher, and counselor—was also a skilled translator. His defense of his translation of Rom 3:28 (“by faith alone”) and of several psalms provides insight into the principles that guided his translation and continue to inform the difficult and necessary work of translation.

The power of a book can be seen in its effects, and few books have had more dramatic effects than Revelation. Attempts to control the effects of the book by ignoring it or dismissing it have not been successful; Revela- tion’s secrets are too alluring. We do better to consider the effects the book has had on Christians over the centuries and to let this history of influence help shape a way to read the book that is both faithful and compelling.
