Alexander Campbell attracted both ardent admirers and determined foes during his lifetime, yet in the century and a half since his death he became largely unknown or misunderstood, especially outside of the religious movement he helped establish. Inside, descriptions were almost universally admiring, depicting him as an unparalleled preacher, writer, theologian, educator, and one of the most learned men in America.

Leonard Allen, Dean of Lipscomb University’s College of Bible and Ministry, has been helping Churches of Christ engage their history and theology for four decades. This book constitutes Allen’s boldest attempt to reveal the pitfalls of the anti-tradition posture of many Churches of Christ and, conversely, the riches of embracing the Great Tradition as an ally in the challenging twenty-first century context. The Stone-Campbell Movement, of which the Disciples of Christ is one branch, takes pride in being a non-creedal faith community, but that status is more complicated than our claim would suggest. There is a tendency among Disciples to discount theology and confessions of faith, with some saying one can be a Disciple and believe anything one wishes. However, Disciples have deep Christological roots. While Disciples have historically turned to the Bible, and especially the New Testament, for confessional guidance the center of Disciples identity is the confession Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.
