In Memoriam: Dr. James B. Buskirk (1933–2020), James Shelton, Arden C. Autry Phd, Sally Jo Shelton

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

James Buskirk is honored as the founding Dean of ORU’s Graduate School of Theology. A Master of Arts degree was already in place; Buskirk was tasked with establishing a Master of Divinity, a Doctor of Ministry, and a PhD in theology—each fully accredited. During his tenure, faculty and student numbers increased along with denominational diversity. The MDiv and DMin achieved accreditation. The PhD was not started, however, as Oral Roberts dealt with competing financial priorities. Roberts’ declared decision not to offer a PhD led to Buskirk’s departure. He remained on good terms personally with Roberts. Buskirk’s effect on others is …

The United Church Of Canada History Of The Unon Of The Presbyterian, Methodist, And Congregational Churches Of Canada, Walter Seehagel Apr 1965

The United Church Of Canada History Of The Unon Of The Presbyterian, Methodist, And Congregational Churches Of Canada, Walter Seehagel

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study concerns itself with the movement which brought The United Church of Canada into being. The writer is concerned not so much with the theology and the psychology of the movement, as he is with the history of the movement. Accordingly, the study will endeavor to set forth "how" The United Church of Canada came into being, and not “why" it came into being. It will therefore trace the union movement step by step until its consummation on June 10, 1925.

Religious Influences In Louisiana Elections (1924-1956), Benjamin Franklin Veit Jun 1958

Religious Influences In Louisiana Elections (1924-1956), Benjamin Franklin Veit

Bachelor of Divinity

This paper attempts to discover the existence, if any, of religious influences in Louisiana elections since 1924. Several reasons bear upon both the selection of the state and the period. The author chose the State of Louisiana because it occupies a rather peculiar place in American politics. Typically a Southern state, Louisiana lacks, at least on the surface, a two-party system. Hence the complication of conflict between party loyalty and religious affiliation is removed. Louisiana is typical or the states of the South in that it contains a considerable Roman Catholic population. Indeed, the National Council of Churches has listed …

The Formation Of The United Church Of Canada, Milton H. Riemer

Bachelor of Divinity

After twenty-five years of negotiations between the Methodist, Congregational, and Presbyterian Churches of Canada, the organic union of these three bodies into The United Church of Canada was consummated on June 10, 1925. This thesis shall deal primarily with the twenty-five years preceding the union. Of necessity we shall have to look briefly at the present-day characteristics of The United Church of Canada if we wish to arrive at any conclusions regarding the success or failure of the venture. Furthermore, since this is to be primarily an historical presentation, there are large areas regarding these twenty-five years before union which …
