Why Art And Design Matters, Leah J. Berkowitz

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

This capstone is an exploration of the history and development of art and design within China, from the beginnings of drawing and printing from over 2500 years ago, all the way to the Tiananmen Square Protests of 1989 and the current day Covid-19 lockdown protests. Of Homespun Opulence: An Analysis Of Jane Freilicher's Pastoral Abstraction In Parts Of A World, Grace Wolfe Jun 2021

Of Homespun Opulence: An Analysis Of Jane Freilicher's Pastoral Abstraction In Parts Of A World, Grace Wolfe

Anthós

During a period of bold abstraction and American individuality, Jane Freilicher’s landscape and still-life paintings stand out for their figurative nature. Her use of color and tone to conjure the simple pleasure of life at home enrapture the viewer in a simultaneously universal yet personal experience. Upon closer inspection of her work, it becomes clear that although figurative in nature, Freilicher’s paintings abstract the pastoral to express identity in an urban environment. This essay examines Freilicher’s 1987 work, Parts of a World, in context with pastoral works throughout art history to understand the ways in which Freilicher both reflected …

Tracing The Routes Of Floating Exhibitions: A Fluid Cartography Of Post-War Modernism Around 1956, Laura Bohnenblust Dec 2019

Tracing The Routes Of Floating Exhibitions: A Fluid Cartography Of Post-War Modernism Around 1956, Laura Bohnenblust

Artl@s Bulletin

This article discusses the phenomenon of floating art exhibitions based on the examples of the Argentinian exposición flotante and the Australian Pacific Loan Exhibition (both 1956). They manifested themselves at the same time as the “second wave of biennials” and can be interpreted as floating national pavilions. Through a spatial analysis of the routes taken across the open ocean, it is shown how the ships’ movements form what can be understood as a ‘negative map’ of canonical art history, oriented around the North Atlantic. This cartographic approach reveals blind spots in art historical research and contributes to the creation of …

Bloomsbury's Byzantium And The Writing Of Modern Art, Elizabeth Sarah Berkowitz Feb 2018

Bloomsbury's Byzantium And The Writing Of Modern Art, Elizabeth Sarah Berkowitz

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

“Bloomsbury’s Byzantium and the Writing of Modern Art” examines the role of Byzantine art in Bloomsbury art critics Roger Fry’s and Clive Bell’s narratives of aesthetic Modernism. Fry, in his pre-World War I and interwar writings and teachings on art, and Bell, in seminal texts such as Art (1914), have been branded by art historiography as the prime movers in a Formalist, teleological narrative of Modern art still prevalent in textbooks today. Fry’s and Bell’s ideas were later adopted by important Modernist authors and cultural figures, such as Alfred H. Barr, Jr., first director of New York’s Museum of Modern …

Clyfford Still In The 1930s: The Formative Years Of A Leading Abstract Expressionist, Emma Richan

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In 2011, Clyfford Still’s painting 1949-A-No.1 sold for $61.7 million at Sotheby’s auction house. This painting was one of four up for auction by the artist that night, fetching a total of $114 million to build the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver to house his entire estate. Still was among the most celebrated and notorious of the Abstract Expressionists, receiving the highest praise from Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, and Clement Greenberg during his lifetime. Still’s legacy has faltered since his death in 1980. Until 2011, 95% of his life’s work was stored in a barn in Maryland, hidden from view. …

The Role Of The Artist At The Beginning Of The Twenty-First Century: An Exploration Of Dialectical Processes In Art And Science With Particular Reference To Biologically Based Art, Judith D. Roche Jan 2005

The Role Of The Artist At The Beginning Of The Twenty-First Century: An Exploration Of Dialectical Processes In Art And Science With Particular Reference To Biologically Based Art, Judith D. Roche

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis examines the role of the artist at the beginning of the twenty-first century. It focuses on the interaction between art and science in an exploration of the dialectical processes that may occur in that interaction. Researchers have recently developed techniques in stem cell technology and genetic modification that offer remarkable potential and bring possible advantages and disadvantages for scientists and the wider community. In response to these new technologies, scientists and artists have developed collaborative projects and, in some instances, artists have moved from the studio to the science laboratory to create work called sci-art, bio-art, or moistmedia. …

Nationalism: A Search For Unity, The Role Of The Mexican Government In Sponsoring Contemporary Fine Arts, Katharine Ferris Nutt

History ETDs

The following discussion is in part the history of nationalism in the fine arts of Mexico, as a spontaneous expression and as one artificially stimulated. Of equal concern, however, are the State's endeavors to channel nationalism by controlling the bellas artes through subsidy, decree, and law, and finally by the creation of a national institute or theater. The writer has endeavored to reveal both the advantageous and disadvantageous aspects of the government's control and to render some idea as to the extent to which cultural nationalism may forge permanent unity among the Mexicans.
