The Labyrinth And The Cave: Archaic Forms In Art And Architecture Of Europe, 1952–1972, Paula Burleigh Sep 2018

The Labyrinth And The Cave: Archaic Forms In Art And Architecture Of Europe, 1952–1972, Paula Burleigh

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines the prevalence of spatial archetypes as potent symbols that manifested in art, architecture, exhibition design, and urban planning in the aftermath of World War II and into the Cold War. Owing to the dual influence of structuralism and phenomenology in French intellectual culture, many examples discussed here were produced in France or made by artists who spent significant time there. These figures include Jacqueline de Jong, Paul Virilio, Claude Parent, André Bloc, and the Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel (GRAV), all of whom made projects evoking speculative realities that oscillated between utopian and dystopian.

Given their focus …

History And Desire: A Short Introduction To The Art Of Cy Twombly, Michael Schreyach Jul 2018

History And Desire: A Short Introduction To The Art Of Cy Twombly, Michael Schreyach

Michael Schreyach

This book is meant for readers (and viewers) searching for an introduction to the major themes of Twombly’s art, and for an explanation of the techniques by which he realized his intentions. It presents a developmental history of the artist’s achievement in various media (mostly painting, sculpture, and drawing). At the same time, it addresses certain issues that concern art historians more broadly, such as modern art’s relationship to the past.

Elemental Analyses Of Archaeological Bone Using Pxrf, Icp-Ms, And A Newly Developed Calibration To Assess Andean Paleodiets, Christine L. Bergmann Jun 2018

Elemental Analyses Of Archaeological Bone Using Pxrf, Icp-Ms, And A Newly Developed Calibration To Assess Andean Paleodiets, Christine L. Bergmann

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As a result of the quick rise of pXRF technology in archaeology, there are concerns regarding the reliability and validity of data output acquired from pXRF. In this study, I test the hypothesis that portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometry can provide reliable and valid results, using newly developed calibration curves, for the analysis of archaeological animal and human skeletal materials in prehistoric Peru to address hypotheses about ancient diet and trade. While pXRF systems may come with calibration software, the few if any standards and reference materials provided with the instrument rarely correspond to the vast array of archaeological materials …

Earthen Monuments And Social Movements In Eastern North America: Adena-Hopewell Enclosures On Kentucky’S Bluegrass Landscape, Edward Ross Henry May 2018

Earthen Monuments And Social Movements In Eastern North America: Adena-Hopewell Enclosures On Kentucky’S Bluegrass Landscape, Edward Ross Henry

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Geometric earthen enclosures are some of the best known pre-Columbian monuments in North America. Across the Eastern Woodlands, many have been preserved as state and national parks. However, their chronological placement is poorly understood as they relate to the rise of complex social behaviors associated with the Adena-Hopewell florescence (500 BC–AD 500) in the Middle Ohio Valley. This is especially true for communities who built smaller enclosures referred to by archaeologists as ‘scared circles’. To better understand the timing, tempo, and nature of their construction I examined the Bluegrass Region in Central Kentucky using aerial and terrestrial remote sensing methods …

Mortuary Patterns In West-Central Tennessee: Contextualizing Historic Field Data From Nine Mississippian Period Sites, Brooke Adele Wamsley Apr 2018

Mortuary Patterns In West-Central Tennessee: Contextualizing Historic Field Data From Nine Mississippian Period Sites, Brooke Adele Wamsley

Theses and Dissertations

Middle Mississippian is a both a cultural and temporal (1200 CE – 1400 CE) archaeological context of Midwestern North America. This cultural tradition is associated with mound building, specific art motifs, arguably stratified societies, intensive agriculture, and specific ritual/mortuary practices. Burial sites can be very valuable to archaeologists because of the purposeful interaction between the living and the deceased and reconstruct cultural elements such as social identity and group membership. While American archaeology continues to be fieldwork-focused, there are a considerable amount of cultural resources housed in museum collections that could provide data for research into pre-Columbian lifeways in North …

In early 2017, Moore Archeological Consulting, Inc. (MAC) conducted archeological monitoring of mechanical scraping at site 41LB42 located on Capers Ridge in Liberty County, Texas. This action was done to offset adverse effects associated with impending pipeline installation as part of the larger Luce Bayou Interbasin Transfer Project (LBITP), a Coastal Water Authority (CWA) infrastructure undertaking that will transport freshwater from the lower Trinity River to Lake Houston. Previously survey, testing and data recovery by MAC identified high density, high integrity finds situated on the summits of three small knolls found within 41LB42. The CWA subsequently repositioned the LBITP pipeline …

Ethnohistoric Records Of Hunter-Gatherer Diet Of The Texas/Mexico Borderlands: Implications For Staple Foods Of The Lower Pecos Canyonlands During The Holocene, Tim Riley

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Hinds Cave (41VV456) and other rockshelters excavated in the Lower Pecos Canyonlands have yielded thousands of coprolites spanning the Holocene. To date, several hundred specimens have been analyzed, providing a detailed record of meals consumed by hunter-gatherers who called this landscape home. This article compares the paleodietary records derived from these specimens with the foodways documented in the ethnohistoric records available for the Lower Pecos Canyonlands and adjacent landscapes. This comparison confirms the deep temporal roots of the foodways recorded in the earliest written records of the Texas/Mexico borderlands. Coprolite data corroborate the strong dependence on the seasonal staples of …

Glass Beads In Iron-Age And Early-Modern Taiwan: An Introduction, Kuan-Wen Wang Jan 2018

Glass Beads In Iron-Age And Early-Modern Taiwan: An Introduction, Kuan-Wen Wang

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Archaeological research has revealed a long history of glass bead exchange and use in Taiwan, yet it has seldom been discussed in the literature. This paper provides an introduction to this exchange from the Iron Age (ca. late 1st millennium BC – mid-2nd millennium AD) to the early modern period (ca. AD 1600-1900) by revisiting the archaeological and historical records. It is suggested that changes in bead styles and chemical compositions over time reveal the transition of bead supply in Taiwan, which further reflects two broad phases of bead trade: Phase I) the earlier involvement of Taiwan in the Indo-Pacific …
