Light is not only a basic condition for photographic process but also a versatile tool for photographic image-making and a metaphorical agent for photographic expression. In a cross-cultural context, there are universal but complex religious interpretations of light phenomena; light has been associated with mystical experience and alchemical process and has been symbolic of enlightenment or salvation. In literature light implies many ideas, e.g. the "colorless all-color of atheism" (Helville) and the "inexplicable" human condition (Beckett). Current attitudes toward light, generated by advances in technology, dominate fading religious concerns.

The inquirer usually recalls pictures of objects from the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamen, or of the Royal Cemetery at Ur, or perhaps even of the Dead Sea scrolls. But if one were to look for museum objects that have intrinsic value apart from their historical context, one certainly would not choose to dig in Palestine, whose peoples throughout history have been relatively poor when compared with the inhabitants of Egypt or Mesopotamia. IF YOU SHOULD VISIT THE SITE of Andrews University's archeological excavations at Tell Hesban in Jordan, you would be in distinguished company. Among the many visitors we had during the 1974 season were several members of Jordan's royal family, including King Hussein's cousin, Prince Raad, who actually worked with us on two occasions. Other visitors included Jordan's former prime minister and elder statesman, Suleiman Nabulsi; the current Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Ghalab Barakat; and such members of the diplomatic corps as U.S. Ambassador Thomas Pickering. Clara Sipprell's photographic career spanned almost seven decades of artistic exploration in picture-making. In April 1975, she died at age 89, leaving behind a great many friends and a pictorial legacy of considerable achievement. Whether she was photographing the crown princes of Europe or Robert Frost in his back yard, Miss Sipprell's ability to capture her subject's innermost personality became the hallmark of her work.

The manuscript collection of Anna Hyatt Huntington, sculptor, 1876-1973, left to the George Arents Research Library at Syracuse University by Mrs. Huntington is of special interest to students and scholars of American culture. Her correspondence, scrap-books, and diaries are a record of a long and successful career as a sculptor.

By drawing upon archival materials and personal interviews, the present article demonstrates the mergence of two major characteristics of Mrs. Huntington's work in this equestrian monument of Joan: technical precision and idealism.

Anna Hyatt Huntington (1876-1973), one of the foremost American sculptors of her time, presented a large quantity of her personal and professional papers and sculpture to Syracuse University. In addition to the Huntington Manuscript Collection located in the George Arents Research Library at Syracuse University, the University owns diverse and numerous examples of her art. These statues, numbering over sixty pieces, represent a variety of subject matter, mood, and grouping completed throughout a career that spanned seventy years of artistic activity. Her general approach continued the French naturalistic tradition of Barye, Fremiet, and Falguiere. Although both wild and domestic animals …

PEOPLE OFTEN WONDER what an archeological excavation costs and where all the money comes from. An American expedition now excavating at Idalion in Cyprus, for instance, spends more than $60,000 per season. Comparable expeditions often spend much more; rarely do they spend less. Yet the 1974 Andrews University expedition to Tell Hesban in Jordan, with 75 staff members and 150 workmen (more than twice as many as Idalion), cost less than $30,000. This was possible only through an extremely efficient and economical use of funds, and because individual staff members were responsible for their own travel costs to Jordan.

FOR MORE THAN ONE HUNDRED years, Seventh-day Adventist Bible teachers, authors, and evangelists have used the data provided by archeological research in the Near East to illuminate, bolster, and defend the faith. Herein is a discussion of creative thinking as it is manifested in scientific and artistic inquiry. Specifically, creativity is treated as a special kind of problem solving and is discussed as a mental process rather than an isolated event. The process consists of three phases: 1) preparation, 2) subconscious work, and 3) evaluation. These three periods are seen as essential characteristics of creative problem solving. The creative process consists of both conscious and unconscious mental activity. During 1904-1911, Edward H. Thompson recovered some gold disks which have repousse designs showing military encounters from the Sacred Cenote at Chichen Itza. In addition, there have survived numerous carvings and frescoes at the site which depict scenes of armed conflict and surrender. The disks, frescoes, and carvings have been interpreted as events pertaining to the conquest of the Chichen Mayans by invading forces from the Toltec city of Tula in central Mexico. However, in recent years, influences from Mesoamerican sites other than Tula have been recognized in the art style of Chichen, and it is known that Toltec features …

The work has been mainly in two media, oil and watercolour. Initially, there was difficulty finding an approach that would treat vegetative themes similarly in either medium. The watercolour paintings had several strong qualities that were not present in the oils. These strengths were the watercolour's great luminosity and dense design of transparent brush strokes, whose rhythmic structure was separate from the pictorial image.
