The Battle Over Memory: The Contestations Of Public And Familial Narratives In Remembering 9/11, Cheng-Yen Wu

On September 11, 2001, the four plane crashes marked the three sites of trauma that, to this day, sit in the heart of United States history. The paper examines the contested and often conflicting public and familial narratives at sites of memory and the recurring themes behind commemoration narratives. Drawing on newsletter articles and seven interviews with members of September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows and The Peace Abbey, the paper concludes that national and public remembrances of 9/11 adopted a top-down approach that has repressed familial remembrances in three main ways: by glorifying the victims, co-opting the version told …

On September 11, 2001 (9/11), a coordinated Islamist terrorist attack hit the United States, consisting of four commercial airline hijackings and suicide attacks by 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group, Al-Qaeda. This paper identifies the significant and enduring influences of 9/11 on the United States including discrimination against people of Middle Eastern descent following the attack, a connection between the events of 9/11 and the enhanced interrogation techniques at the Abu Ghraib prison, and a surge in patriotism characterized by a sense of public solidarity and a notable rise in military enlistment in the Armed Forces. This thesis project argues that memorials constructed after 9/11 were designed specifically in a way that privileged and focused on the dead individually. By taking a look at memorials throughout American history, the study of memorialization sets up the stage for the way the lives of ordinary people have been memorialized throughout history. 9/11 is one of the most memorable days in the history of the world in the 21st century. An estimated 2 billion people around the world watched the catastrophic destruction of the World Trade Center. The enormity of the moment was immediately understood, and both news coverage and history of the catastrophe quickly took on global proportions—less understood has been the effect on the locus of the attacks, New York City, not as a seat of political or economic power, but as a community; not in the days and weeks afterward, but in the months and years. Rev. Larry Recla, a 1972 graduate of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, was pastor at a church in Queens on September 11, 2001. He spent the next 8 months working at the Ground Zero Temporary Morgue, rendering physical and spiritual aid to recovery personnel, blessing human remains in the morgue, and riding with bodies as they were transported off site. ABSTRACT In modern US history, the 1990s are often regarded as “The Decade of Peace and Prosperity.” Though the liberalization of markets and a technology boom fueled American prosperity, expectations of post-Cold War peace remained elusive. The attacks of September 11, 2001 (9/11) caused thousands of deaths, national and global panic, and immediate action by the federal government to protect the borders of the United States of America (USA) from terrorism. In response to these attacks, the United States (U.S.) government enacted laws for law enforcement agencies to protect against terrorist activities. Law enforcement agencies are effective in combating terrorism, but their measures contain a major flaw - the improper use of race in profiling to address national security and public safety concerns. This essay argues that the success of Frédéric Beigbeder's Windows on the World is due to Beigbeder's use of the seemingly contradictory genres of autofiction and hyperrealism in the depiction of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. By positioning himself in the text alongside his fictionalized American counterpoint, Beigbeder configures 9/11 as a lived-body experience that models the ways in which the post-9/11 subject was formed within specific political, cultural, and national conditions. The effect of the novel’s hyperrealism is such that Beigbeder simultaneously posits and deconstructs the notion of national identity within the greater contexts of postmodernism and …

This paper analyzes the changes in immigration policy since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in terms of how immigrants are viewed in the United States. The goal is to address the recent criminalization of immigration in that the perceptions of terrorists and immigrants have become relatively synonymous since 2001. Although deportations have decreased, immigrant detention has increased significantly. Pearl Harbor and 9/11 have been compared together since the 9/11 attacks. This thesis analyzes the two from the viewpoints of the politicians, the media, and finally the effects on culture. Sources were gathered from newspapers, books, journal articles, government resources, and internet web sites. Pearl Harbor and 9/11 are similar on the surface, but upon looking into further circumstances, dissimilarities are found between the two events. With sixty years between the two events the outcome and delayed reactions are different, but the initial response is similar.

President Bush's response to September 11 — he has called this "war on terrorism" a "crusade" — is terrifying in its own right, framing the future as a reprise of the medieval past: several centuries of battle between Christianity and Islam. It's "going to take a while," Bush said. The White House may have subsequently backed off that rhetoric, but the metaphor (if it is one) draws on entrenched habits of thought.
