The history of the town as such is short--scarcely seventy years--but there was of course a long interval of sketchily recorded events prior to its foundation, in the area which immediately surrounds the site. In all, the period covered by this paper is about a century and three quarters; in that time the frontier post came and went, was succeeded by the tobacco town, and that too faded, leaving only shards and foundations to mark its place.
