Cold Warriors in the Sunbelt studies the ways in which the Cold War experience shaped the attitudes, values, and beliefs of white evangelicals in the South. It argues that for Southern Baptists in particular—the region’s most dominant religious majority—the Cold War provided a cohesive and unifying fabric that informed the world views Southern Baptists constructed, shaping how they interpreted everything from global communism, the black freedom movement, the Vietnam War, and controversies regarding the family and gender. The schism between American missionary and anti-mission Baptists of the 1820s and 1830s stemmed from an ideological disagreement about how Baptists should interact with the rest of society. While anti-mission Baptists maintained their distance from "worldly" non-Baptist society, missionary Baptists attempted to convert and transform "the world." Anti-mission Baptists feared that large-scale missionary and benevolent societies would slowly accumulate money and influence, and that they would use that influence to infringe on the autonomy of local congregations and the religious liberty of the nation. Southern Baptist men and women had lived and worked in China as missionaries for a century when Japan began its occupation of the country. They built churches and established schools and medical facilities while spreading Christianity. When the Japanese army, in 1937, escalated the war in China the missionaries found themselves working in two arenas. Many were involved in refugee relief activities in Free China, while others willingly maintained their positions in occupied territory. After the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and the United States entered World War II Southern Baptists in Occupied China became prisoners of the Japanese. They were …

This thesis developed from a seminar paper on the South China Mission of the Southern Baptist Convention, 1945-1951, prepared for Dr. R. Barry Westin in the tall of 1965. Though the scope of this present study includes Southern Baptist Missions in all of China during the same period, its purpose remains the same. That purpose is to present the course of the evangelical outreach or this large Protestant denomination, and the progress made in establishing an indigenous Christian movement in China before the Communists forced the withdrawal of all missionary personnel.

In 1558 with the accession of a Protestant Queen on the throne, England had the appearance of religious freedom. Around 1559 Dutch and Flemish dissenters emigrated to England bringing with them Baptist beliefs. Elizabeth's religious policy, however, was not one of toleration. Not being a religious zealot, she desired a workable religious situation. As a result the Elizabethan Settlement was a compromise and came to mean no religious liberty but no inquisition. In 1559 Elizabeth became Supreme Governor of the Anglican Church in the Act of Supremacy. The Act of Uniformity passed in the same year forced the people to …

This is a brief history of the Baptist of Louisa County, Virginia, to 1865. It would be impossible to gather all the impressions made on Virginia society and the American way of life by Louisa Baptists. The author of this paper has not always been a Baptist, but is a Baptist by conviction. Much of the tradition and color of the old days is still noticeable in the Louisa County Baptist Churches. Louisa County has been and ever shall be a better county in which to live because of Louisa Baptists.
