Enedina Manríquez was born in Guanajuato, Mexico. Her family moved to the United States when Manríquez was ten months old. Manríquez and her family have lived in many places in the United States, moving to find work. They finally settled in Scottsbluff, Nebraska where her parents could work at a restaurant that Enedina’s uncle owned. Manríquez’s parents now own the restaurant. Manríquez is a part of DACA, which allows her to attend school and work in the United States as an undocumented immigrant. She discusses how being undocumented has impacted her life. Esthefany López Cruz is the daughter of Honduran immigrants. In 1998, her parents decided to embark on the dangerous journey to the United States to escape the devastation of Hurricane Mitch. López Cruz was only one and half at the time. The family settled down in Hastings, Nebraska to be close to López’s Cruz grandmother. Because of debates around Temporary Protected Status, López Cruz fears that the government will send Hurricane Mitch survivors like her back to Honduras. López Cruz faced many challenges growing up in a Spanish-speaking household while attending a school that taught subjects in English. Despite that, …

Carlos Ortega was born in Chihuahua, Mexico. His family moved to the United States in 2001. Ortega initially struggled in school because of his difficulties with English. With the support of a dedicated teacher and through immersion, Ortega eventually became fluent in English. Both in school and in the community, Ortega has faced much racial discrimination, including physical assaults. Ortega wishes to become a teacher to teach tolerance to young students and to help both adult and young Hispanic immigrants learn English.

Juan Carlos Guzmán was born in Tepic Nayarit, Mexico. At age 14, Juan and his family immigrated to the United States to join his father in California. Guzmán struggled because of his undocumented status. Guzmán wanted a better life for himself and used education to achieve that goal. After graduating from Grand Island Senior High School, Guzmán attended college and now holds two Masters’ degrees. Guzmán has always worked to improve conditions for other immigrant families in the community. His current job is to help other students that face the same challenges he did. Her parents were well respected in their hometown, but they immigrated to the United States to build a better life for their family. García’s life has been marked by the experience she had growing up with Hispanic heritage in Lexington. García has extended family in California, Kansas, and Mexico, allowing her to experience the different cultures of both the United States and Mexico. The College of Technology provided instruction in Mining Engineering (later dropped), Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mechanical Engineering, and Forestry (later known as Pulp and Paper Technology). John Jacob Nolde was born in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1919 and died in 1988. He was a member of the faculty of the history department at the University of Maine and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He served the University of Maine from 1950 to 1984. During the 1940s, the University of Maine was one of many U.S. colleges and universities to offer tuition-free summer courses under the Engineering, Sciences, and Management Defense Training Program, funded by the U.S. Office of Education.

The classes were for high school graduates not planning to attend college and were intended to train students in defense activities in order to fill urgently needed technical and scientific civilian positions just prior to and during U.S. involvement in World War II.

Irwin Bruce Douglass was born in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1904. A scholar, teacher, researcher and humorist, Douglass became a professor of chemistry at the University of Maine at Orono in 1940 and carried out a number of studies into potato starch and the chemical process (and pollution) involved in the pulp and paper industry processes. He retired in 1972 and moved to Vermont where he died in 1998.

The record group mostly contains textual information during Douglass's tenure at the University of Maine, but there are also some photographs of events Douglass attended.

William Pease was a professor of history at the University of Maine, 1966-1987 focusing on U.S. history. Jane Pease was a professor of history at the University of Maine, 1969-1987 and in 1975 also taught the first Women's Studies course at the University. Together, the Peases authored Bound with Them in Chains: A Biographical History of the Antislavery Movement.

Professor Katherine Ogilvie Musgrave was born February 8, 1920, in Allisona, TN. Having graduated with a B.S. in Food Nutrition from Maryville College in 1941 Musgrave would go on to earn a M.S. in Nutrition from Oklahoma State University in 1968. The following year (1969) Professor Musgrave started at the University of Maine as an instructor and assistant professor in Food and Nutrition before in 1979 earning a professorship. Professor Musgrave retired from the University of Maine in 1986 but remained active in the field of nutrition.

In 1883, the Maine Board of Agriculture called for the establishment of a formal experiment station in Orono. With the support of state funds the Maine Fertilizer Control and Agricultural Experiment Station (later becoming the Maine Agricultural & Forest Experiment Station). Eventually the Station would expand its research into genetics and breeding, entomology, forestry, food, potatoes, blueberries, and dairy. Such studies have been funded by both state and federal agriculture grants.

In 1958, a School of Business Administration was established in the College of Arts and Sciences with curricula leading to the B.S. degree in Business Administration with major programs in Marketing, Finance, Accounting, and Industrial Management.

In 1965, the School of Business Administration became the College of Business Administration. The College of Business Administration provided a four year course in business administration with majors in accounting, finance, management or marketing. Walter S. "Bud" Schoenberger was born in 1920 in Pittsburgh, Pa. and died in Orono, Maine in 1998. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and his doctorate from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He was a professor of political science, specializing in international relations at the University of Maine in Orono. He authored the book, Decision of Destiny, a Political Analysis of the Decision to Use the Atomic Bomb. He retired from the University of Maine in 1989 as professor emeritus having taught for 34 years.

James Stacy Stevens, the son of Henry Francis Stevens and Emeline Heydock Stevens, was born in Lima, New York, on August 21, 1864. Stevens married Bertha E. Bowerman in 1890. He came to the University of Maine as a professor of physics in 1891, established the department of electrical engineering in 1893, and served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1905 until his retirement in 1932. Stevens Hall on the campus of the University of Maine was named in his honor in 1934. Stevens died on March 24, 1940.

John Hankins was born in 1905. He earned his B.A. in 1924 from the University of South Carolina, his M.A. in 1925 and his Ph.D. from Yale in 1929. He came to the University of Maine in 1956 as Head of the English Department. Hankins retired in 1970. He was Professor Emeritus in 1970.
