Horses, Culture, And Trade: The Impact Of The Horse On Southeastern Native Nations, 1650-1830, Jacob Featherling

Master's Theses

A small portion of the regional literature details the impact of horses on Southeastern Native nations and focuses on a few of the larger groups, particularly the Choctaw, from the mid-eighteenth to the nineteenth century. This thesis intends to increase the scope to analyze the entire Southeastern region, as well as multiple Native nations in the area. The thesis argues that Southeastern Natives slowly adopted horses into their economies and cultures over a longer period of time than previously believed, allowing them to increase their use of horses easily to meet market demands. Instead of southeastern nations rapidly adapting their …

The Community Of Mullinville, Kansas (1870-1900), Marilla A. Alford May 1941

The Community Of Mullinville, Kansas (1870-1900), Marilla A. Alford

Master's Theses

In this thesis I have attempted to preserve the heritage of the pioneers for the coming generations of the Mullinville Community . I have closed the main body of the thesis with the year 1900 because I feel that the last forty years are too close to the present to be discussed without prejudice and that the lives of my own family have been too closely connected with the history of the community for me to take an unbiased attitude. I trust that sometime later someone will pick up this history where I have left off and add more to …

Social Conditions Of Territorial Kansas, Clifford Dwight Miller Jul 1936

Social Conditions Of Territorial Kansas, Clifford Dwight Miller

Master's Theses

Who were the people making up Kansas Territory, or simply “K.T.”, as correspondence was addressed from everywhere? Coming to Kansas from New England and the Middle Atlantic states through the agency of the Emigrant Aid Company, from the Middle and Western states, from the Southern states, and from foreign countries, they had a variety of folk lore and pioneer technique they could put to work. It seems that they would constitute an extremely chaotic society when viewed from this standpoint; yet, they were all sired by progressive peoples, and, if we consider them from the viewpoint of culture and social …

A History Of The Indian Missions Of The Presbyterian Church In Kansas., David Harold Mccleave May 1935

A History Of The Indian Missions Of The Presbyterian Church In Kansas., David Harold Mccleave

Master's Theses

The beginnings of the missionary activity of the Presbyterian Church date back to the colonial days of the eighteenth century. In point of American historical chronology, the missionary work of the Presbyterians among the Indians in what is now Kansas, southwestern Missouri and east central Oklahoma was inaugurated in the same decade that witnessed the War of 1812. It was my original intention to confine, this research to a consideration of the Indian missions established by the Presbyterian Church in that part of the Indian Territory which has now become the State of Kansas. There were five such mission stations …

Christian Missions Among The Kansas Indians, Bertha Ellen Milstead May 1930

Christian Missions Among The Kansas Indians, Bertha Ellen Milstead

Master's Theses

The establishment of Missions among the Indians who were settled in the Kansas region is apart of the story of the “Winning of the West.” The fate of the Indian was certain from the very beginning and those forces which fitted him in the end to take his place in the national life as a responsible individual were real factors in progress. The reservation system was but one stage in the gradual crowding of the Indian from his free hunting life and served only as a training school for the next stage of individual responsibility. One of the agencies which …
