The Migration Into Richmond (1775 To 1860), Ada May Land Oct 1949

The Migration Into Richmond (1775 To 1860), Ada May Land

Master's Theses

Richmond has today become one or the most important cities in the South. The foundation was laid for this early in its history. In 1775 Richmond was a village of only a few houses; in 1860 it was a growing city. The story o! the years between 1775 and 1860 is tied up closely with the story or the migration or people into Richmond and with their lives as they helped to develop the capital or Virginia.

I have in this paper attempted to show the trend of migration into Richmond from 1775 to 1860 and to show the important part …

A Survey Of Early Washington County And A Study Of The Development Of Hollenberg, Kansas, J. Holland Vernon Jul 1949

A Survey Of Early Washington County And A Study Of The Development Of Hollenberg, Kansas, J. Holland Vernon

Master's Theses

The first permanent settlement in Washington County was made in the late eighteen fifties. Beginning in the 18301 s, emigrants from the East had crossed it repeatedly. This small trickle of travelers was to grow to impressive proportions in the late forties and early fifties when thousands rushed westward to the fertile land of the Pacific Northwest and to the gold fields of the Sierras and 1 the Rockies. During the late sixties, the county was settled rapidly and by 1875 it was well beyond the pioneer stage. Its growth and development has been gradual and consistent-typical of numerous other …

The Sociological Implications Of Women's Fashions In The Crinoline Era (1840-1860), Margaret Ruth Brinson Jul 1949

The Sociological Implications Of Women's Fashions In The Crinoline Era (1840-1860), Margaret Ruth Brinson

Master's Theses

A study of women's clothes shows that they have played their part and have been of great importance in reflecting the thought and culture of the time. A study of fashion fancies and desires has proven fascinating and the Crinoline period had a wealth of charming costumes and ideas.

I have tried to differentiate between the decades, using the thirties as a mere transition period to the time generally referred to as Crinoline. The Appendices have been compiled for the purpose of easier identification of the actual clothing of the period. From the museums, I have taken pictures and obtained …

A Chapter In The History Of Orange County, Virginia, William Livingston Kirby Apr 1949

A Chapter In The History Of Orange County, Virginia, William Livingston Kirby

Master's Theses

In 1753 Orange County could hardly have still been oalled a frontier region, but its society remained like that of the more exposed communities to the west for some time. It was neither overpopulated nor was the land intensively cultivated. The flora and fauna had hardly been affected, and wolves frequently howling at night reminded the inhabitants that the job of taming their environment was yet unfinished. These wolves were suffi ciently destruotive to demand bounties, and many farmers, planters and. gentlemen eked out their income by presenting the head of a wolf to the sheriff, who paid a hundred …

A History Of The Midlothian Coal Mines, Charles Ray Routon Jan 1949

A History Of The Midlothian Coal Mines, Charles Ray Routon

Master's Theses

This thesis attempts to tell tho story of the coal mining industry in the northwestern part of Chesterfield County, Virginia, The coal deposits in this area are only a part or a larger coal basin lying west or Richmond and covering several counties, but as the title suggests, this paper is confined entirely to the mines in the vicinity of Midlothian. It is a history of the mines, and no attempt has been made to deal with the technique or mining except where such remarks have been included because of the historical interest; tor example, the layout of the mines …
