Floyd Gibbons was an author, journalist, and radio personality. He was born in Washington, D.C. in 1887 and died in 1939. He was on the staff of the Chicago Tribune starting in 1912 and was a war correspondent during World War I. Papers contain correspondence, columns, comic strips, manuscripts of his writings, radio scripts, recordings, news clips, photographs, and Gibbons family memorabilia.

Prentice E. Gudgen Jr. was born on April 15, 1939 to Prentice Everett and Gretta H. Stuessi Gudgen. His father was a coach at Pittsburg State University. He graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1958 and worked for McNally’s Manufacturing for twenty-seven years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Boy Scouts of America, and the Crawford County Historical Society. Gudgen was also a local historian. He passed away on June 16, 2006.

George B. Hugo was born in 1866 in Massachusetts to French immigrants. Hugo married Jennie Saulsbury in 1888 in Boston and in 1893 a daughter they named Ruth was born. In Boston, Massachusetts, George worked as a merchant. In 1909 he published his book, Socialism: The Creed of Despair. Carroll Franklin Terrell was born in 1917 in Richmond, Maine. After receiving his undergraduate degree from Bowdoin College in 1940, Terrell entered the Army and served in World War II from 1941-1945, attaining the rank of captain. He began teaching at the University of Maine in 1948 and earned his master's degree from the University in 1950. He later earned a Ph.D. from New York University.

Cecil John Reynolds (1903-1998) was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts. In 1927, he won a Rhodes Scholarship to attend Oxford University where he earned Bachelor of Arts and Literature degrees in 1930. In 1935, Reynolds began teaching at the University of Maine and in the 1940s, founded an English honors program.

This collection contains textual information created and curated by Reynolds including copies of his autobiography and various essays, manuscripts, and lecture notes.. Holdings include photographs of Reynolds.

John Hankins was born in 1905. He earned his B.A. in 1924 from the University of South Carolina, his M.A. in 1925 and his Ph.D. from Yale in 1929. He came to the University of Maine in 1956 as Head of the English Department. Hankins retired in 1970. He was Professor Emeritus in 1970.

Collection includes biographical information from the faculty index,correspondence, dramatic pieces, poems, and short stories (including some written by Hankin), articles, and speeches, newspaper clippings on a range of subjects, conference material, and various items regarding events Hankin attended celebrating William Shakespeare's birth.

Dr. Hilda M. Fife was born in Greenland, N.H., in 1903. She received her B.A. degree from Colby College and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell University. She also did graduate work at Boston University and the University of Chicago. She became professor of English at the University of Maine from 1946 until retiring as professor emerita in 1969. She founded the Maine Old Cemetery Association and was active in the Kittery Maritime Museum, the Rice Public Library in Kittery, and the Maine League of Historical Societies and Museums. She died in 1990.

Edward "Ted" M. Holmes was born September 27, 1910, in Montclair, N.J. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1933 and moved to Maine in 1939. Ted received master's degrees from the University of Maine at Orono (1954) and Brown University (1956), and earned his doctorate from the latter in 1962. Ted began college teaching in 1954 at Farmington State Teacher's College, now the University of Maine at Farmington. He came to UMaine in 1956, where he taught English (1956-1977) and then honors courses well into his 80s, eventually retiring in 1995.
