Trade helped to catapult early societies from hunter gatherers – living in small communities of friends and family – to living in sprawling urban environments of ideas and exchange. William T. Sherman, Commanding General Of The Military Division Of The Mississippi, 1864-1866, Henry W. Johnson
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation
Much has been written about General William T. Sherman. His name appears in nearly every general account of the Civil War. But, after a careful examination of the field it has been found that one aspect of his career, namely, his role as Commanding General of the Military Division of the Mississippi, has been neglected. In part, this might have been expected. Since much of his work was of such a nature as to cause antipathy in a large portion of the present United States, it is understandable that Southerners might hesitate to write on it.

In developing this subject one must consider the exact meaning of Revolution. We must not construe this term to mean constant, systematic and gradual changes, which are continuously developing civilization. However, the term in its broadest sense might be so construed, but it is our purpose to study the mental conditions that has to do with minds in a state of "excited change"- "mental upheaval"- "abrupt development"- such as the Mexican Revolution, French Revolution, the Russian Revolution and the revolutions which may have all the mental aspects of a major revolution even though it may not succeed in its purpose.

These, and many other questions of the same type are asked by tourists when they are informed that the building on Orleans Street, formerly the Orleans b ballroom, is the Convent of the Holy Family and the motherhouse of …
