The Arnold Shankman Papers are a treasure trove of historical research in a variety of areas. Within the American Civil War era, Shankman had extensively researched the “copperhead” movement of northern opposition to the war and was an expert on one of its leading members, Clement Vallandigham. Pursuing his interest in ethnic history, Dr. Shankman was a pioneer in the study of how ethnic and immigrant groups viewed each other. The collection contains correspondence, newspaper articles, citations, photographs, and church bulletins. Also included are family business papers from the time of Ida’s Irish immigrant great-great-grandfather, John Crawford (1750-1826) to the time of her father James Roy Crawford (1891-1980). The papers and correspondence which includes original deeds, wills, and other primary documents that reference the sale of slaves, the Civil War, and the Reconstruction of the South. In December of 1980 and April 21, 1981, Anne Ledford and Susan Rippy interviewed Winthrop alumni and former faculty member Bessie Garison. Garison describes student life at Winthrop from 1908 until her graduation in 1912, as well as her memories of Winthrop’s training school. Garison discusses her memories of Winthrop’s founding, campus life, buildings, uniforms, and professors. Garison offers insights on changes made at Winthrop between her years as a student and when she began teaching in 1937. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections Oral History Program.

The John Gary Anderson Papers consist of biographical sketches of J.G. Anderson and Alice Holler Anderson (wife of J.G. Anderson), newspaper clippings offering accounts of the success and failures of the Rock Hill Buggy Company, the Anderson Motor Company and “the Rock Hill Plan” for reduction of the cotton crop in the south. Also included is a map of Rock Hill dated 1891 and scrapbooks containing advertising materials for Anderson’s products, photographs, and correspondence relating to Anderson’s business, his will and years as a trustee of Winthrop College (1920-1937).
