The Johnston Family Papers consists mostly of material genealogical in nature. This genealogical material was accumulated by Andrew D. Johnston with much being handed down to him by family members. Also included is genealogical research conducted by Mr. Johnston and by Patricia Andrews Johnston Treadwell. The research includes Family Tree Makers files, pedigree charts, descendant reports, ahnentafel reports, family unit charts, grave records, family narratives, published genealogical materials, marriage announcements, and obituaries. The Arnold Shankman Papers are a treasure trove of historical research in a variety of areas. Within the American Civil War era, Shankman had extensively researched the “copperhead” movement of northern opposition to the war and was an expert on one of its leading members, Clement Vallandigham. Pursuing his interest in ethnic history, Dr. Shankman was a pioneer in the study of how ethnic and immigrant groups viewed each other. For example, he was one of the first to use early African-American newspapers to determine the views of blacks toward Italian immigrants and other groups. The collection contains correspondence, newspaper articles, citations, photographs, and church bulletins. Also included are family business papers from the time of Ida’s Irish immigrant great-great-grandfather, John Crawford (1750-1826) to the time of her father James Roy Crawford (1891-1980).
