No one has ever published a history of the Slate industry in Buckingham County, Virginia. Many geologists and newspaper correspondents have written from time to time, short articles and technical descriptions of various phases of the Buckingham slate industry, but all of the related published material that I have had access to has been somewhat sketchy and inaccurate. Consequently, this essay is an attempt to fill, in a comprehensive manner, another of the numerous gaps in the economic and industrial history of Virginia.

The Church had been cleansed of the Roman element, the Puritans were working within the Church, the civil government protected the Church and the people respected her. This religious motivation coupled with the new political end material well being in England were responsible for the efforts which resulted in Jamestown.
